The "no hair selfie" app thing going around

Not sure where else to post this, but wondering if it bothers anyone else? Seen here:

I'd been seeing the #nohairselfie hashtag on twitter the past few days so I went to check it out. There is an actual shaving fundraiser going on at the same time, but this virtual part I really don't get, and really I kind of find it offensive. People trying on a bald head for lols is one thing, doing it under the guise of cancer awareness is just a big no to me.

The explanation from the site: "The #NoHairSelfie campaign is a new digital fundraising campaign to show solidarity for the thousands of people who undergo cancer treatment each year. #NoHairSelfie encourages people to actually or virtually shave their heads on February 4, 2015 in support of World Cancer Day."

Maybe the app isn't free or something and the funds go to the foundation, but I'm missing something here.

Saw it. Stupid. Just another way for people to get their 15 minutes....like that ice bucket challenge. All of these things are just idiotic, virtual white noise. I don't blame you for finding it offensive, though. There was a time I would have too. Now I just write it off to the self-absorbed needing to get their face on the web.

My experience with it is a bit different -- at least for the "real shave" choice.  Someone where I work is known for his wild grey longish curly hair.  He was challenged to shave it to raise money in connection with this fundraiser for Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.  He agreed if he raised $500,000.  As of tonight, he has raised over $700,000, and tomorrow night, he will have his head shaved.   I think that's pretty great.

I get the real shave part especially if it is attached to fundraising, that's kind of a ballsy thing to do, especially if you had long hair, it's the virtual thing that has me giving it the icks.

Shaving hair as a fundraiser is fine with me. $700,000! That's terrific. On the other hand, shaving for "awareness" and "solidarity" is pat-myself-on-the-back-I'm-so-sensitive. Disrespectful is the nicest thing I can say about it.

I would be ok with it, if they had to donate $ before posting a selfie. But just to get their kicks... disrespectful of us who lost our hair due to treatment. It's been five years since chemo & I still don't have my eyebrows back. GG

I agree. Shaving for fundraising is one thing. This other ... For awareness is stupid and disrespectful. I was glad to see this thread because this campaign has been bothering me.

Ridley:  that is quite impressive that he raised that much money!   Big kudos to him!! That is truly shaving for a cause.

Sorry, I find the whole thing offensive and that it is Princess Margaret just astounds me!!! Why in name of god can't people just give money - I am sick of this self-absorbed stupidity - this isn't solidarity, it's "LOOK AT ME" - honestly, the real thing isn't fun, not at all!

208sandy, that was one of the things that boggled me too, that it was coming from a cancer centre. Made me wonder why their PR department or whoever, thought this was a good idea, did they talk to the patients? I was following the hashtag on twitter and read into a bit more. There was NO obligation for the app users to donate any money, it was just hoped that they would. I tweeted the hashtag saying that the bald app made me uncomfortable as a survivor, and the PM foundation tweeted back "thanks for the feedback" and that they "hoped" people would donate. I found a great article on the topic that summed things up nicely: http://osocio.org/message/nohairselfie-good-way-fi...

I think as a fundraiser maybe, but as an awareness thing, NO.For some reason I feel like I'm being made fun of. I find this really offensive. It was really hard to me to go out in public when my hair first started growing- but I did. I knew I was getting the odd look, but tried to ignore, I hadn't done anything wrong and yet it was a struggle to be myself. Is this the 'awareness' they are trying to promote? I think if someone actually shaves their head in solidarity or to fund raise great, but 'trying' it on to see what you look like? Really? What's next, an app to see what you would look like with a MX?

To me, it's as offensive as the "bald caps".
