Fibroadenoma's in woman over 40...

I'm reading that fibroadenoma's are more common in woman under 30. I'm in my 40's and losing hope that this is what I have, even though the initial report said it was possible due to shape, etc. Radiologist said he didn't think it was a cyst. I had my biopsy this morning and now waiting… and scared to death. I have fibrocystic dense breasts., so they've always been lumpy certain times of the month, but if they aren't common in your 40's, there's only one other thing left.

Mothree, I was 57 when I was diagnosed. I had a mastectomy and, in addition to the cancer, there were fibroadenomas in other parts of my breast. I had a prophylactic mastectomy 3 years later (age 60) and fibroadenomas were also found in that breast, though no cancer was there.
So, yes, it's very possible that what's showing up in your breast is a fibroadenoma.

I hope so. Best of luck.

Thank you, Leah, for responding. I so hope that's all it is too. Seems like it's not as common over 40 for sure. But maybe that's why they say not to read too much info online. Thanks again!

I have 3 confirmed Fiboroadenomas in my breasts and I am in my 40's.  I have multiple other assumed, not biopsied.  I also have fibrocystic breasts with countless cysts of various shapes/sizes.  Are your breast dense?  Mine are extremely dense.

I am comfortable for now just doing close survelliance every 6 months.  I alternate US/Mammo then MRI 6 months later, been on this schedule for years.  Hopefullly you just have busy breasts like me.  So yes, it is possible to have benign fibros in your 40's.  Hope this helps.

I am in my 70s and had a fibroadenoma in one breast. Doc commented that he was surprised as it is usually found in young women - but I was on HRT so presume that was connected - as well as the bc in the other breast!

Thank you for responding! It turned out to be a fibroadenoma, so I guess I can join that club too. I might have it removed if it keeps causing pain, but for now I can breath again.

VanillaPudding, yes I do have dense breast tissue. I hate the idea of having to get mammograms every 6 months now :-( I feel like they aren't good for me either, but that's what they recommend.

    Thank you all again!

I had my fibroadenomas found in my late 40's I think. I had one found on US and by the time I went for the biopsy there was a 2nd one. Go figure. I now have 2 more places that look the same to me but are possibly fluid filled cysts due to an excisional biopsy I had a year ago. We are waiting 6 months to see if they change before deciding what to do. I don't believe that they are as uncommon after 40 as doctors lead us to believe. However I also had my son at 45 so maybe that had something to do with my getting them later. Or maybe they were always there and just not found until I started having ultra sounds. I know that when I had my first mammogram due to dense and lumpy breasts I was told that I had fibrocystic breasts. I'm glad that yours was confirmed, because yay for benign! But I did want to respond for anyone seeing this post so that they know it is very possible at that age.

I also had a fibroadenoma found when I was diagnosed at age 52.
