I can't believe there is no thread dedicated to mouth sores.

I am asking for this drug tomorrow.

Caphosol wonder if anyone has tried it.

we all know the usual treatments

salt water gargles/baking soda etc etc.

I've had this sore over week. finally healing. my mo increased afinitor to 10 then I had 5FU pump in my usual dose

then boom all my mucous membranes break down.

googled something about L glutamine mouth gargles. not really sure how to do

any new ideas treatments?

just found this

I didn't have mouth sores, but I did have thrush and my teeth ached a lot. My teeth still bother me at times actually. They gave me magic mouthwash and it helped to sooth the irritation. Have you tried that?

    Hi Fredntan,

In addition to the helpful advice you've received and are sure to receive here, you may be interested in checking out the main Breastcancer.org site's side effect page on Mouth and Throat Sores (Mucositis) for some more tips!

    We hope this helps!

fredntan - I used Caphosol - it worked very well for me, I had probably a dozen mouth sores after chemo #1.. I am prone to them anyway, but they were all gone within 48 hours of starting to use Caphosol.  Are you getting drugs by infusion?  If so, try holding ice in your mouth during the infusion.  I did this on the following 5 infusions and never got another mouth sore.  I did not do the salt and baking soda gargle, but here is that recipe, they say to do these several times a day -

Some people also had good luck with MuGard, which I believe is different from Nystatin, which is an anti-fungal - so it is good for thrush, but not necessarily mouth sores.

I had mouth ulcers during chemo, went to the dentist after treatment due to pain and 1 tooth was crumbling, gums receeded a lot too- 2 years later and my teeth still ache at times, sensitive due to gums but no more taken out as yet. was give corsodyl mouth wash and some ulcer tablets I cannot remember the name of but they were good

I've been very lucky so far, I've just finished infusion 4/12 of Taxol and no mouth sores yet - I did change my toothpaste and mouthwash when I started chemo - I am using Paradontax - also bought an electric toothbrush with a steriliser and I sterilise the head after every use. My Oncologist prescribed magic mouthwash which I use three times a day and I have some Episil on standby. If it makes you feel better, I'm struggling with sores in my nose instead

I swore by Witch Hazel during my treatments.  I used a mouthwash that had witch hazel as an ingredient and the only time I developed mouth sores was when I ran out of it, then I got a bad one.  The magic mouthwash very temporarily numbed my mouth and allowed me to eat, but what I felt really sped up healing was, yep, more witch hazel.  I dipped a q-tip in some and held it against the sore a couple of times a day.  Worked for me.  These suck !

Witch hazel also helps other sore areas during treatment too.

LYSINE!! It's a miracle fix. At the first sign of a mouth sore, pop two of them. Take them periodically throughout the next few days. I was having a problem with them years ago and this knocked them out for good. I haven't had one in years. I am going to have it on hand when I start chemo for sure.

My MO has me taking L-Glutamine powder in water 3x a day... he says it prevents mouth sores. I dunno, but I haven't had any. Without the Glutamine during my first cycle, my mouth was very tender. Since then, it hasn't been bad... a few times where I had to be careful not to brush hard and my toothpaste seemed harsh, but most of the time it's been pretty normal.

oh my inundated with tongue and mouth blisters. I have the magic mouthwash, witch burns for me, yucky, the baking soda gargle helped but didn't take them away. My teeth hurt first few days, and now the slight red nose fluid leaking. At the 11th day, mouth less tender, hope this does not return at next chemo infusion. Will try the ice, but nervous of cracking a tooth, teeth. One more thing, have pimples now?

For the pimples get script from onc or PCP for cortisone cream and dab a little on - pimples go away overnight.
