dim, curcumin, vitamin d and tamoxifen
I have just read about some studies which suggest dim, vitamin d and curcumin inhibit the effects of tamoxifen and resveterol and melatonin enhance the effects. Sorry I didn't save the links, I'll have a look for them. Tamoxifen didn't work for me and I was taking dim and curcumin, i have always slept with a light on which inhibits melatonin production. Just wondering if anyone else took these supplements and tamoxifen didn't work for them.

Not sure about DIM or vitamin D w tamoxifen, but a recent study showed Tamoxifen does not work well if you do not sleep in the dark, for whatever reason, but quite possibly due to lack of melatonin production.
-
My SO and MO both concurred last night that they did not want me taking any supplements or vitamins as they are "too paranoid about what possibly may interact with Tamoxifen."
Really? So, no fish oil for my joints and heart, no vitamin D, no turkey tail mushrooms, no MCP, no selenium, no daily aspirin? I just can't bring myself to cut these things out. Some of them I am taking just in case Tamoxifen is doing nothing for me. Did anyone's onc tell them differently?
-
Scotty, I did not take any of those supplements and tamoxifen failed me so I'm not sure why it didn't work for me? I felt I would be protected for 5 years but that was not the case. Came to learn later there is a test to see how you metabolize tamoxifen. Wondering if I was a poor metabolizer and that's why it didn't work for me. Best of luck to you, I know alot of women it did work for.

katcar,
I take Femara and am stage IV, so my situation is different, but I take some supplements, with my mo's approval. I currently take Vitamin D3, melatonin and turmeric. In the past I have also taken boswellia, glucosimin/chondroitin and pro-biotics. I think the evidence for supplements interfering, or not, with Tamoxifen or AI's, is not clear so mo's may err on the side of caution

scotty, exbrnxgrl, annieoakley and labelle--I am meeting with new onc in SF today and will see what he says about supplements and pass on any interesting information. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
-
@katcar.... My MO told me quite frankly that a pharmacist was the best person to consult about any interactions between tamoxifen and other drugs/supplements as they have access to the most up-to-date information. My pharmacist has been great that way and has, on occasion, phoned my MO to confer on things.
-
Thank you, Selena. I will have to find a good pharmacist in the Bay Area while I am here. The ones in Mexico are not well trained. They never know about interactions.

Hi Scotty, I take 10 mg of Tamoxifen a day along with lots of supplements. I take 1200 mg curcumin, 1/2 tsp. Ginger, about 1/4 tsp. black pepper mixed in a tsp. Cold pressed olive oil. I also take selenium, olive leaf extract. Co enzyme q-10. Ester C, vitamin D3 and some other things. I don' t know how the supplements are affecting the Tamoxifen. I also take calcium d glucerate. I have DIM and just don' t whether to add it or not. I also take a little coconut oil, unrefined virgin cold pressed.
-
Also I wanted to add that Benedryl prohibits Tamoxifen.
-
My MO and naturopath want me taking D, curcumin, melatonin and tamoxifen.
-
I'm keen to hear more on this topic, especially DIM with Tamoxifen. I'm thinking of adding DIM to my supplements. My MO said it's ok and my Integrated Medicine Dr says DIM enhances the effect of Tamoxifen. Checking if others have same experience?

Hi there - i take DIM and Indole-3-carbinol every other day as i can't take Letrozole every day due to the muscle and joint pain i experience. I know that you are asking about tamoxifen and i just thought i would chime in to share what i am doing. I hope that the DIM/ I3C will hopefully pick up some of the slack for the part time usage of letrozole.
-
Thanks Roaming Star. I've decided to start DIM/I3C in the new year. In addition to Tamoxifen. The Tamoxifen is treating me well, no overt side effects. Will monitor over time. The reason I want to add DIM is just extra precaution. So desperate to keep the cancer at bay.
Take care
-
I'm starting DIM as well in the new year as I cannot take Tamoxifen.
Wishing us all the best as we good forward on this journey.

The only anomaly in my bloodwork when I was diagnosed was a major vitamin D deficiency I didn’t know I had. My family doctor put me on 5,000 iu/day of D3 for 6 months and I still take 4,000 iu/day. I’m now 6.5 years out and almost 6/10 years on tamoxifen. I don’t have any genes which impact my tamoxifen.
-
Spoonie77, hoping that DIM works well for you! My integrative medicine Dr holds it in high regard.
BCat34, thank you for sharing. So encouraging to hear a positive long term Tamoxifen story!
All the best to you all!
