Being a public health nurse makes it more scary.

edited January 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

Hey everyone. Last year around this time I lurked quite a bit here but never signed up and said anything. I recently turned 31 and had my first mammogram and U/S last January with a BIRADS 3 result and an option to go ahead and have a biopsy or come back in 6 months later. As a public health nurse who pushes patients to be compliant with diagnostics and followup, I should have known better than to wait. I decided the risk of tissue damage from the biopsy was something I did not want and that I was too busy for a 6 month follow up. At my annual visit in December, my OB got onto me about not following up and sent me for another diagnostic mammogram and U/S. The lump was bigger compared to her notes and also she felt an enlarged lymph node. Today I went in for the imaging. The tech made a few funny faces, took her pictures of the suspicious areas, at times with the red and blue vascular areas showing. She left to check with the radiologist to be sure the imaging was sufficient and came back telling me that the radiologist still has to compare last years test with this one but that most likely it is a complex cyst but that it's suspiciously dense (these are the tech's words, I wish I had actually spoken to the radiologist). Anyway, she said that I would likely be in very soon for a biopsy. I'm thinking if it's something that suspicious, I should have a phone call soon. I don't expect a response to this at all, I just needed a place to type it out and hopefully get it off of my mind until they call. I drove myself crazy waiting last year and can't do it again this year. Thank you for your positive stories. Reading this board has helped me cope tremendously. I know that the odds are in my favor, but it's very reassuring to know there are plenty of women around the world waiting on the same exact results. Although medical terminology is mostly my first language, it's a lot different when you're the patient depending on others to get back to you in a timely manner so you don't lose your mind. Thank you for letting me tell my imaging story and I wish all of you the best health possible.

But you were being compliant. Biopsy is nor recommended for a birads 3. Just short term follow up to check for change

Welcome to BCO Amarie176. Glad you finally joined this forum and posted your concerns. As a health professional, it is so different to be on the patient side!

We understand your concerns but please keep your current attitude that it is likely to be benign and follow the advice given as to follow-up or biopsy. Your medical team seem to be doing what is required.

    We wish you the best.
