Self employed - anyone use a private disability policy?

I am self employed and do a job that requires lifting of children who have physical disabilities. The doctor said most women with BMX without recon can go back to work at 6 weeks. That would be fine if I typed or answered the phone. I am 5 1/2 weeks post op, still exhausted, need aftenoon nap and can't lift more than my purse without it hurting for hours in my chest. Can't imagine lifting a wiggly kid for sometime. Just got all the forms from my private disability policy that kicks in at 8 weeks. I don't know how this is going to work as there is a lot of difference in my job description. Am I in for a big struggle now? BC had been enough of a struggle!

If you've changed occupations since taking that policy out, you'll have to read your policy carefully to see whether it covers your current job (or just fill out the forms, as the claims people will be doing exactly that.). Also, do give your doc a heads up that you need more time off, and why, and make sure s/he is aware that the insurance company will be in touch, looking for exactly that information in your records.

The good news about a disability policy where you pay the premium is that your benefit will tax-free, and probably your premiums will be paid by the company while you are not working. And please take your time about going back--you do not want to be concerned that one of your children will accidentally whack you in a tender place.

Have had policy for years. Same job so that part should be ok. I outlined all issues for my doctor to have details. Am a bit paranoid as I heard insurance companies try to twist what you say to get out of paying. Thanks so much!
