DIEP and Multiple Sclerosis

Hi, I will be having a double mastectomy and I have really been leaning towards the DIEP procedure, but now I am worrying about how it will affect my multiple sclerosis. Has anyone had DIEP done and had MS?

Hello, I had a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction with tissue expanders. I also have MS and doctors felt that the DIEP procedure would have been too physically taxing on me as it is a little more invasive procedure. Hoping someone else can chime in with their experience. I breezed through all of the surgeries as well as the exchange surgery.  Best of luck to you!

Thanks Annie! Was it your plastic surgeon or neurologist that made the decision?

Also pre-surgery, did you experience a lot of MS symptoms

nmh35, it was my plastic surgeon and surgical oncologist that made the decision. Pre-surgery I was just experiencing my usual MS symptoms but the surgery did not affect me in any negative way at all, I was surprised as I too was quite concerned. I had 6 surgeries in total over 2 years including having my ovaries removed and all went well.
