Stage Four - Paying Rent on Disability

Options

I know it depends on where you live, but how do you afford a place to live alone, pay for insurances/co-payments for multiple disorders, eat, and have the basics when you are new to an area, do not have a car, and fall in the hole of 20-60 and do not qualify for help?

I also have other disabillities.

Put out to pasture at 46. Literally could not earn a penny or be over income limit. Had temp alimony. Almost 3 years to get Disability. Completely wiped out. 'Family' useless. Was back in grad school and used student loans to help subsidize rent, major expenses. Car was totaled by a DUI in 12/2012. Fatigue and chronic pain, lack of transportation and too much eduction make it almost impossible to find a job or work.

Cable, eating out, going to movies, etc. long gone. It's been ten years. My comfort is my dog.

I can't balance a budget on $1,550/month? How do you do it without a roommate or staying with a friend or family and not having to pay rent?

Can't tolerate the aromatase inhibitors, the only choice for treatment now that I am metastatic. In a way, it's a relief. It'll all be done in < 3 years. This is no QOL. I do not live.

I wish I had some answers for you because your situation sounds desperate. Have you been able to talk to anyone at your clinic, like a social worker who might know of resources?

It would be nice if you could look forward to "another day" in 2015 (as your screen name describes) instead of feeling like you're not able to live. Some locations have a congregation or fellowship which focus on helping people through difficult circumstances. Find out who's in your neighborhood...

anotherday, I can sympathize with your plight, I am stage IV also and in disability and there's three of us and only my income. Daughter is in school. Thankfully ex-husband is paying for rent otherwise my daughter would have had to drop out of school and go back to work. She should be graduating in December and when she gets a job and is settled my income will be mine. I too live in Florida (Orlando) but I might consider moving back to Texas because living cost and health care is better over there. My daughter does miracles with the budget I don't know how she does it. I thought of applying for Section 8 housing but according to Florida HUD  they're not accepting applications right now.

Still I try to keep a positive attitude because I'm convinced cancer feeds on negative emotions. Talking with others who are going through similar issues helps. Feel free to PM me if you need to talk.

I am back in NY State for now. I came to the conclusion that there is no income-based housing for most disabled, thanks to decades of poor or no policy-making.

Seems like the want to warehouse the elderly, disabled, etc. in high rise towers, often in bad areas, or out in the hinterlands.

A CIL in PA gae me a bad phone number, a national org that i know does nothing for housing, and one that does good background checks on people. The later did not return my call after 3 messages.

My first Masters was in Public Admin, with a focus on NPO Mgt. I know how the game goes. Professionals tell me some networks are so broken
