Dx DCIS &Tumor Lump & SNB Now Possibly wrong DX?
I found a lump in my breast in 11/2014.
Had Core Biopsy 12/2014 Results came back with DCIS Nuclear grade 2 with Necrosis Present and Comedo Present. Tumor at least 2mm involving a papilloma. Plus they were Estrogen+ Progesterone+
Anyway the surgeon was suspicious of second tumor and I had an MRI which didn't show anything other than the tumor that had been biopsied.
Finally I had a lumpectomy last Monday and they removed the sentinel node. If everything was ok I was just to have the radiation. Suppose to get pathology report on Thursday and they called me on Thursday and her nurse told me that they were having to send the samples to the Mayo Clinic. When I asked why she just said that they could not tell me anything until they had a final report. Ofcourse I immediately thought I was dying! I finally got in touch with the Surgeon that night because I was so upset and she told me that I may not have cancer after all. That if Mayo confirmed this I would not have to have radiation treatment. She said they sent the original biopsy and the surgery lumpectomy and the node to Mayo.
So it's been a week today. I still haven't heard anything else. Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm a mess! Did I have this horrible surgery for nothing? Thank you

Hi thejoyk,
I absolutely would not look at this as though you had the surgery for nothing.
I am very curious why they felt they wanted to send the sample to the Mayo clinic, but really I think it sounds like you are having a very thorough evaluation.
If something was seen initially, I can't imagine that anyone could have figured out what they were dealing with without having a lumpectomy.
I had a papilloma in my other breast, diagnosed via a biopsy, and they still felt they needed to do a wide excision to fully evaluate it and know what it was.
This is possibly a scary situation because many of us get treated based on pathology results.
Scary if something is missed. Scary if something is over read.
Please keep us posted on what the Mayo Clinic finds, but really, in my opinion the surgery was needed and lots of people get lumpectomy type surgery just to make a/the diagnosis.

Thanks Yikes! I know I am just unnecessarily speculating here, but since it was hormone positive... and I have a blood clotting disorder so I couldn't take the normal medicine and they were talking hysterectomy... I wonder if that would still apply if they decide it isn't cancer? +hormone receptors wouldn't matter then, would they?

I had an excisional biopsy and the tissue is routinely examined by two local pathologists. One called it DCIS / Lcis the other called it ALH/ADH . It was sent for a tiebreaker to Vanderbilt who called it ALH/ADH. Apparently it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference. When invasive was found later I asked my onc why we didn't have two pathologists look at that sample. She said invasive is easy to tell. Hang in there.

Well it's confirmed! Everything I was diagnosed with is now not the diagnosis. Mayo Clinics head pathologist determined I do not and did not have cancer to begin with. What I did have was Ductile Hyperplasia in a pappaloma. No further treatment necessary. So the radiation is cancelled and no hysterectomy now that was deemed necessary because I have Factor v liden def and couldn't take Tamoxifen. I think this was a blessing directly from God.
