This thread is very similar to the suggestion a therapist gave me when I was first diagnosed with mets in June 2011. She suggested keeping in mind 5 things to look forward to, a couple of long range things and a couple of short term ones. It helps me so much not to look years and years out which is overwhelming but to instead look at things within the next 6 months or so.
1. My dear husband, my high school sweetheart that grew up with me. We're planning a trip to celebrate our 35th anniversary this Oct.
2. My beautiful children, and 3 grandchildren and our family vacation to the NW in July.
3. I'm not done learning, and every year I make sure to learn at least one new thing, looking forward to knitting lessons beginning in March.
4. I haven't finished my career, still searching for someone I'm comfortable with who can take over my 26 year investment in this place. I look forward to retirement in the next 18 months and drawing some of that social security and pension I've put into for so many years.
5. The house isn't ready, still have to organize the attic and finish one more part of the yard landscaping, looking forward to spring to see how last years new perennials come up and then adding some more.
I mostly lurk but love all of your posts.

Baobao's first snow day or Reason #2!

How cute,Heidihill! Thanks for posting it. We got our first puppy back in Oct. He just loves the snow we have been having. Goes out and just digs his face right into it. I am having all kinds of fun watching him. Makes me think of my carefree childhood years out in the snow with my sisters and brother.

Reason #3: The view from on top of a mountain.
Here's one from the Matterhorn: http://project360.mammut.ch/#route/matterhorn/hoernligrat-route/150/details

Hey ladies. Would love to hear some other people reasons.

My five senses, for taking in the world and its wonders.

ahh good one nine twelve

remembrred this thread from so long ago and needed to remind myself of my answers. Was great looking back at oters answers and seeing what has been accomplished.
-
1. I want to retire and enjoy like without working. If I die before I can get the money they've been stealing from every paycheck I am going to be one pissed off dead person.
2. My nephew who will graduate in 2 days. He need my influence.
3. My parents. I don't want them to go though the pain of losing me.
4. My cats, Selma and Bryce, my beutiful little princesses! They are sisters and 3 years old. I adopted them both because I didn't want anyone to separate them, and I don't want them to separated if I die before they do.
5. Knitting
-
1) Cannot leave my husband as a young widower - we have only been married two years, together for five. We need more time.
2) I still want to have a family - even though it will likely be through untraditional means.
3) I don't want my parents to have to bury a child.
4) I have an awesome 16 old nephew who I want to see hit all the milestones.
5) Because life is beautiful, crazy, amazing and I love it all.
Really could easily come up with 105 but these are the tops...

Thanks Patty for reviving this and glad to see you! My five reasons are only the tip of the iceberg and rather cliche. But here goes......1. My DH needs me 2. I want to be there for my children's weddings and baby births 3. I have a million art ideas I want to create 4. travel and see more of this world 5. work harder at engaging and connecting with people from every walk of life
-
Thanks for the bump, Patty!
HLB, LOL on #1! I need to get the ball rolling on my early retirement so thanks for the reminder.
-
HLB, your #1 reason to be alive cracked me up hard! Love it! Love your great sense of humor! Carry on!

Thank you for bumping up this thread. It is always a good idea to reflect on the things in life that are precious to us and worth living for. I have so many, but here are five.
1. I love my DH dearly, and I want to be here to share his life and to support and take care of him for many more years.
2. I was diagnosed stage 4 bc right after DH and I retired, and my DH was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer 5 months later. (He is currently cancer-free, YAY.) Now I want us to enjoy the retirement we dreamed of.
3. I want to take some courses that I never had time for when I was working. I want to learn to paint, to dance, to sail, to be a better gardener, to cook a mouth-watering chocolate soufflé, to arrange flowers like a pro. The list goes on and on and on.
4. I want to live long enough for my grandchildren to remember me and know how much I love them.
5. There are many places I would like to visit. I add to the list of places all the time.
There is one thing I would like to live to see, but I fear it will not happen in my lifetime. I want to see a huge, earth-shattering development in cancer research, a development that leads to the solution to the puzzle of these diseases that are lumped together under the heading of cancer. Before I die, I want to know that our children, grandchildren, and all future generations around the world will be free of the pain, fear, and burden that so many suffer with today.

Since Patty has bumped here, today my 5 reasons to stay alive are: the big #1 They are coming out with many new drugs and therapies. I want to be here for the red letter day!
#2 I have to find out how the new president works out.....Hahahaha!
#3 I AM going to be present and accounted for at my children's weddings...
#4 I MUST see my grandchildren
#5 My DH needs me. We are a classic love story!
-
love the post ! Keep on keeping on. You can go this !

Had to go back and read my answers from 2014.
1. My youngest daughter, she has Down syndrome and would not handle my nonexistence well at all. She tells me everyday that I am a perfect Mom.
2. My devoted husband, he is a wonderful man and I just be dang if anyone else has the opportunity to have him, lol.
3. My other 2 children, even though they are in their 20's now, they still have a lot of growing up to do.
4. My devoted dog, she thinks I am the only one that is important in our household.
5. My dream of seeing my kids get married and hopefully get to hold a grandchild one day.
So many reasons it is hard to narrow it down to 5, I just simply have too much going on to have time to die.
So I have seen one child get married and am close to holding my first grandchild. I will keep my original response. Still need to see my son married and more grandchildren. But I'm thankful to have completed something on my list.
-
Oh hahaha Kandy, I think the same thing about my DH. I'll be danged if anyone else is going to wind up with him! I swear there are already a few single women we know who got it in their mind....Also my kids are in their 20's and still need my guidance for sure. hearing about your youngest daughter just reaffirms the phrase that "life is just not fair". She was given to YOU for a reason so the universe needs to leave you right here to care for her.
-
Well, I guess I would have to say:
1. My husband, because seriously, even though he is quite independent, I think he'd be lost without me. I fear he'd become reclusive and angry.
2. My 3 kids. I love them to death. They're all married adults and we get along very well.
3. My 5 grandchildren, ages 11, 8, 5, 5 and 3. I want to see them grow and flourish.
4. My sister. She's my only sibling, since my middle sister died in 2009 of ling cancer with mets to the brain. We call each other "soul" sister. She has been through SO much. Lost her daughter who was 31 to pulmonary emboli just last year. Her son is a heroin addict. And yet she preservers. She is my hero.
5. Travel, travel, travel! We are retired and love going places. I have too much on my bucket list, to give it all up....

judy. Very good reasons indeed
