Worried about my mom

Hi,

I'm a fifteen year old girl whose mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer today. The doc said it was between stage 2 and 3, and looking at the statistics online makes me a little... well, it makes me feel a bit better, but I can't help it. We're not in the U.S or anything; we're in a country where health insurance is a myth and salaries are dirt. Not that we're worried about financial stuff--I convinced my mom that we could take out a loan. My dad isn't any help either. He told my mom not to worry about it when she started experiencing symptoms in 2012 and he thinks chemotherapy lasts for an entire lifetime.

The other thing is, my mom is terrified about quitting her job, because she won't be able to take long leaves or anything, so she's nervous about what she'd do at home. That, and she's also scared of losing her hair. I told her we could buy wigs and scarves, but she's still really frightened. I don't blame her.

How do I make this easier for her?

You need to talk to some family member you can trust and not take on all this worry onto your own shoulders.  I'm  not sure if I can help you but I know the moderators will reply soon with some advice, perhaps you can search some topics here that you and your mother can look at together.  You are too young to take on any responsibility here, it is up to your parents and perhaps other older siblings to give you comfort.  Are there no organisations at all in India which might help you to talk through your worries and give you some information?

Being between stage 2 and 3 is not too advanced so don't worry so much.  With treatment your mother will live a long and good life, God willing.

My heart goes out to you Zuha and I will pray for you and your mother.

goodprognosis gave you such good advice. You are too young to take on that much responsibility, so we recommend you to show this amazing discussion board to your mom, and maybe she'll find here comfort, answers and support from others going through similar experiences and diagnosis.

Hello, Zuha--My heart goes out to you, and I share the regret that a youngster like you is bearing so much responsibility. I hope that you and your mother can soon find someone in your family or close circle of friends who can support you both as you work your way through this.

In the meantime, since you are not 18 yet, share these responses and the one from the Moderators in particular, and ask your mother to register for this site (with your help if she isn't as computer-savvy as you). As a member, she too can benefit from the shared experiences and wisdom of so many who have been and still are on this breast cancer journey and she can ask questions of her own too.
