Ovarian suppression in young women
Hi ladies,
I was looking at the results from the SOFT trial which were released today http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1412379...
Video analysis here: The study and analysis talk about the benefit of ovarian suppression with aromotase for women diagnosed under the age of 35. The numbers seem pretty significant to me. However when I asked my oncologist about it, he says they will not be adding ovarian suppression.
I'm wondering if any of you currently receive ovarian suppression in addition to your hormone therapy (for those who are ER+) and why you do (or don't) receive it. Feeling a bit confused about why people seem to have such differing treatments and want to make sure I'm getting proper care.
Thanks!

Young...there are many of us either doing or have done O/S and were anxiously waiting or the results....do a search for AnniceMD... She started a thread for premenopausal grade 1 stage 1...that thread should be very active shortly...
I also started a Sam Antinio Breast Cancer 2014 thread and it has been active all day! So please join us on both those threads

I'm on Lupron and Aromasin and I'm 38

I am 32, and my physician has me taking Lupron and Aromasin as well. He cited the study results which show the significant improvement in odds.

Given the SOFT results, my MO is having me switch from Tamoxifen. We started Lupron this week, and if all goes well and my bone scan is clean, we will switch to an AI. I was 40 at diagnosis, so I'm not in the under 35 group where the treatment arms made the most difference, but he thought that it was worthwhile to try to new approach. He also said that continuing with Tamoxifen alone was a reasonable approach as well. But, I wanted to go for it, so that if this comes back, I am not kicking myself for not having tried it.

Interesting... I guess there are many different opinions out there. My onc does not want me doing ovarian suppression. I am under 35, early stage... he feels my risk of recurrence is not high enough to warrant all the toxicity that comes from ovarian suppression, and he felt it would affect my quality of life too negatively with not enough benefit. So it seems it really depends on the individual doctor and patient. I'm ok with it, not sure my body can take much more!

Hi everyone,
I am new to this thread, but I am so happy that I have found it!! I do not have anyone in my life that can relate to my situation due to my age (all my friends are having babies and I'm fighting cancer).
I was diagnosed last year at the age of 30, with stage 2a IDC (clean margins and no lymph node involvement). I knew right away that I wanted to have both breasts removed as I do not want to ever have to deal with this again (god willing)!! My husband is 7 years older than me and has been amazingly supportive.
My tumor came back as ER+ 100% PR+40% HER2-, my oncologist said she wanted to put me on Tamoxifen for 10 years (very LONG time). knowing this I had made up my mind to have my ovaries removed (I do not have kids and my husband is ok with us not having any biologically). My oncologist is fighting me on this saying I'm too young and that 40+ (keeping in mind my husband would be almost 50) is still young to have kids., but agrees it's beneficial in the long run. This is a hard enough battle now I have to fight for something that we know can reduce my chance of reoccurrence and prolong my life!! I feel she is fighting me on it because I am young and she thinks I want kids.
I was never offered the ovarian suppression but it is something I am extremely interested in (still going through chemo so won't start hormonal therapy for another 11 weeks). For those of you on it do you stay on it for the rest of your life, until a certain age and have a oophorectomy/hysterectomy? Have you had any side effects?
Any and all information is appreciated or just to gain some friends who are in the same boat as myself.
