Just watched this on TV. Amazing thought provoking piece. Gives me hope for my two children in the future when they will be testing for my BRCA mutation.

Thank you again cp418!  I am praying that something big happens before this disease takes me. 

(After reading all of this cancer stuff and looking at all of the ladies on here, I figured out what he said about the chemo although it may be effective to give a big blast to some patients I thought too that it might cause more cancer to circulate in the blood stream and therefore, potentially land somewhere else.)

1. What an uplifting and encouraging piece. I am thrilled to hear about pioneers like Dr Patrick Soon Shiong taking on multi-faceted research without funding from big pharma. He is beholdened to no one but cancer patients themselves.

Also, some areas he talked about are happening in others places too. memorial Sloan Kettering has partnered with Quest to roll out Molecular testing to their advanced cancer patients starting in the Spring of 2015.

Considering that the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium starts this week, I'd say it was very well timed to broadcast this.

I hope he's not doing this just to turn a profit. Big pharma execs earn small change compared to him. Soon Shiong's net worth is $12 billion according to Google. The 60 Minutes piece might have been well timed to raise financial interest in his various ventures. Nothing against that but let's hope cancer patients benefit, too.

Yup. I read that Forbes article as well. I also read the 80+ comments below the article... some of whom make valid points. In the end, if more innovators like him enter the space, perhaps the advances will come quicker. With modern day computing power, combined with Bioinformatics, I'd like to think that we are near a tipping point, but I often wonder if the same thing was said a decade earlier by people like me.

As I understood the interview, he is self funding his research with his own personal wealth. I for one am very glad there are people with such intelligence, business acumen and the personal drive to make a difference.  This coupled with the financial assets seem to be a win win ..
