Why would I need chemo after UMX?

This is all new to me, so I apologize for the dumb question. I had UMX two weeks ago for what was thought to be DCIS. Turns out I had 3mm invasive cancer. There is a board meeting this week that will decide if I should have chemo. Usually they recommend chemo for 5mm or more, but may decide I need chemo. If I had a UMX and my lymph node tested negative, why would I need chemo? If it hasn't spread and my breast was removed, what is the point? Please educate me. I have not yet met with my oncologist.

Thanks!

Luckydog, are you in the US? If so, has anyone mentioned the Oncotype-DX test to you? That's a test that's done on the tissue they removed, looking at 25+ prognostic factors, to ascertain whether or not chemo would benefit you. These days, it's done pretty much automatically -- rather than relying solely on the input of a tumor board. Since you had some invasive bc, it seems like it should have been ordered, so you may want to ask about it.

As to why you or anyone would need chemo with such a small bit of invasive bc and a UMX, I think it all comes down to the aggressivness of that invasive part, which is what the Oncotype will reveal. (((Hugs))) Deanna

    I am 42 yrs old. And I am HER2+.

What does the Tamoxifen do? Would that take care of any cells that got away?

I am really learning a lot from this board. Thank you.
