thick lump
36 years old, A couple of days prior to my period, I happen to feel an thicker lump in my breast, went to urgent care doctor who I knew since my regular doctor was out and she agreed and sent me to get mammogram and ultrasound. Both came back negative and Braids 1. When I went back to see my regular doctor, without even looking at my breast or report said I needed to see a surgeon? No history of issues. He has made me a nervous wreck. I still think it feels thicker, maybe but my not sure since I'm so nervous with his suggestion to see surgeon. Should I just relax since both test were okay?

Hi clowery, in June I felt a lump in my breast my Med doc sent me in for diagnostic testing mamo and ultrasound. Nothing showed up on imaging so he sent me to a surgeon ( which kind of surprised me because nothing was there). My surgeon said he believes if you can feel it but can't see it you will not know what it is unless take it out. That doesn't mean it's bad. It's better to be know now it will give you pease of mind. My Dr said he didn't think mine was malignant but when they sent it to the lab they found a very small (3mm) tumor in the tissue. I am just about to finish my radiation that's all i had to have. The waiting is the hardest most lumps are benign. I'll have you on my mind. You came to the right plase for support there are a lot to people on this site that will help you through the waiting Hug!! I'm sorry your regular doctor made you a nervous wreck. Its so hard when someone seems to be telling you that you may have a serious condition. But your regular doctor is just being thorough.
The more negative (in other words normal) imaging you pile up, the less likely you have anything to be concerned about. Breast thicknesses can be tricky, so your regular doctor is being through in sending you to a surgeon. That doesn't mean that you have breast cancer; that just means you're going to someone who is more specialized in diagnosing breast conditions.
In this one study in the UK, women who were <40 years of age with a breast thickening and, (assuming you would count a breast thickening as no lump size), had a score of 2 thus a probability of breast cancer of less than 5-8%. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC308022... This was a relatively small study, of 802 patients, of which 59 (7%) were diagnosed with breast cancer.
Overall, about 80% of women who get breast biopsies have benign results, and your surgeon has not decided whether or not your symptoms are suspicious enough for a breast biopsy.
Even if you were at higher risk, it still would be a good plan to try to relax, since worrying won't change the outcome, and just makes it harder on you. Let us know how it goes, OK?

Welcome to BCO but sorry you felt the need to come here.
It is better to have a doctor who is cautious and wants to know for sure that it is all benign before saying "all clear", than one who offhand says "it'll be OK". Try not to get yourself in a stressed state by reading too much of what Dr Google has to say in the many dubious sources on the Internet.
We all hope it is nothing to worry about, but you're lucky to have a doctor who wants to be sure, even if he has scared you - it is a very hard time waiting.
Our thoughts are with you for a benign finding.

When the surgeons office called they said he looked at report and said since reports looked negative he would see me in late December, I took that as good sign. -
Sounds like great news. Now you can get back to your life and stop being nervous.
We hope you don't need us but you know where we are now.
Happy for you, the Mods
