edited November 2014 in High Risk for Breast Cancer

I had a question.  Do they get a good idea if you have cancer or NOT during the surgery?  I have a post op appt on the following Wednesday.  5 days is a long time to wait...  Thank you all for your support and comments!

hi-They really can't tell, and if they could, they wouldn't say anything until the pathology report comes in. I had to wait 8 days for results-it's torture. But try not to let it get to you!

thank you April!!! Wow!!! 8 days! Ewe! I have heard there is some blue dye they use? And if it lights up there is cancer? Is that true?

Hi Tracy -- the only blue dye that I'm aware of related to breast cancer is the blue dye they use to find the sentinel node.  As I understand it, they inject that during surgery and the first node that turns blue is considered the sentinel node (might be 1 node or a clump of 2-3) which they remove to test for cancer, on the theory that if the cancer has spread it would first go to the lymph node.  Everyone's sentinel node turns blue with the dye and many are not cancerous.

I think some hospitals are able to test the sentinel node for cancer during surgery, and I think some you can tell by looking at if the cancer has started to grow outside of the node.  In my case, I had to wait for the pathology to come back from the surgery.

Good luck with your biopsy -- hope it is B9.

Just an update. The biopsy came back and I have ALH and LCIS. Now they are going to do an MRI to make sure the other breast is okay. They are also sending me to a oncologist. That you all for your support and information!
