Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had breast implants done and then had a mastectomy later. Im BRCA2 positive and 21, i want to get breast augmentation done now, however i will be having the preventive mastectomy probably in 8-10 years. Will this make it any easier in regards to reconstruction, like if the implants are already behind the muscles there would be no need for expanders etc? Any help or advice on this would be much appreciated!!

Thank you

Hi rachmay - Sorry about the BRCA results, but so glad you know so you can be proactive. I do believe an augmentation now could make the PBM easier, but you could repost to the breast recon forum OR send a private message to whippetmom. The feeling of the implants behind the muscle is the one thing I really dislike about my recon. Good luck with your research.

Hi Rachmay! I actually got tested months ago for the BRCA gene and was positive for BRCA 2 also. I had augmentation under the muscle about 6 years ago. After testing positive I decided to have a double nipple/skin sparing mastectomy. Having the augmentation actually worked to my advantage. I was able to do an immediate reconstruction with implants. The implants I had already created a pocket for the new implants. Hope that helps you! And keep researching the more you know the more it will help during all this. Knowledge is power. Good luck!
