Changing Screen Name/User ID on site

From the time I've been on the site, I have seen a few posters return with a new name - but it is always a new "account" so to speak. They usually write something like "I used to be _____" (and give the old name). Their post count starts at 1 with the new name. 

This week I noticed a name changed without starting all over again. Even the poster's previous threads and comments now have the new name. 

Is this a new function on BCO that I missed? From time to time posters write that they wish they'd used a different name. 

Mods? Anyone?

Edited to add - Settings on profile allows User Name to be edited. Has it always been like that? I could swear it wasn't. Losing brain cells here.

Yes - you can edit your user name without re-registering. Go to your profile page under administrative tools. Click on the edit profile button. The Mods
