Under pressure

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and am hoping to connect with other young women with the BRCA gene mutation, as I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I'm 29 years old and recently tested positive for BRCA1 mutation. Because of the extreme history of breast and ovarian cancer in women in my family at a young age my doctors are recommending the preventative surgeries - having both breasts and ovaries removed sooner rather than later.

I have been married for one year and my husband and I were going to wait a few years before having children. But now I feel under an extreme amount of pressure to have one immediately and then get the damn ovaries taken out. I guess I'm ok with that, I figure what does a few years matter in terms of having a child. But my husband is freaking out. He wants to wait longer until we have a bit more money saved up. But I'm scared of getting cancer if I wait. Several women in my family were diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer at ages 29 and 30.

Meanwhile both my mother and mother-in-law are putting pressure on us to have a baby now.

Anyway, I'm not necessarily looking for advice here.... More just overwhelmed and hoping to hear from other young women who may be in the same position.

Thanks!

Please be sure to check out the FORCE site - www.facingourrisk.org for lots of info on BRCA and to connect with other BRCA women.  So sorry you need to be considering these hard choices at such a young age.

    Hi Sophie,

Welcome to this site! We hope you find others to connect with here who you can relate to.

You might also find the High risk forum helpful in finding others to talk to.

    Best wishes to you

I know how you feel!  I'm 32 and BRCA 1 positive. I have 2 kids and we're pretty sure we're done.  I am under the same pressure from my dr to have preventive surgery like yesterday.  Today my dr told me we can schedule a full hysterectomy next month.  While there is no real "good time" to do this stuff, I don't know if I want to do this stuff right now.
