I am 27. My LAST child was 3 years ago this october. I am not breast feeding at all. On 9-7 me and my husband found a small lump. No biggie i have had them before and they go away. on 9-11 the lump got alittle bigger and began to hurt. By 9-13 i was in so much pain. My breast had gone up a cup size, swollen and red, buring pain, nipple inverted and i couldnt lay down or lean forward. My breast was hard a rock. On 9-15 i went to my doc and yes by then there was alittle discharge. She said it was mastitis. And started me on antibiotics. It is now 9-19 day five of being on the antibiotics. My breast is still bigger then the other. Stings off and on. Nipple is still inverted. I lift my arm and my breast pulls up and inward. It is bruised all around where the lump is. (About the size of a lemon) Itches off and on as well. There is alittle dimpling right under my nipple, and in the morning it isnt there, but by the end of the day the dimpling is there and spreading all over where the bruise is. Shouldnt the lump be getting smaller by now? Is this really mastitis? Im starting to worry...

try not to panic! I too had similar symptoms and still in the process of getting a work up. So far I've had a mammogram, ultrasound all clear. Then I got an MRI which came back "highly suspicious". OMG Panic set in! I was scheduled for a biopsy last Friday and the ultrasound showed no mass but an area which was grey and hypoechoic. Radiologist felt it was an infection  or post traumatic injury and I am on antibiotics. I go to see breast surgeon today and next Friday another ultrasound. I have no children so I was sure I did not have an infection! But we just don't know. Follow up with your doc and demand further investigation. My original doc told me there was no  indication of infection because I wasn't red but it felt so painful it brought tears to my eyes!  Still unsure of what it was or is but my symptoms greatly improved. Hang in there!!  I know easier said than done. I was in such a bad place last week mentally so I know how you feel. CALL your doc for follow up!

I'm sorry you are going through this.  My advice would be to call your doctor.  Your antibiotics should be working by now.  They may need to do something as simple as switch your antibiotics, but I would also be persistent about further work up if the symptoms continue.

Hope you are feeling better soon!
