I was recently dx in August with IDC bc went for my scheduled MRI and they found another lump in the same breast.I had a mrigguided biopsy yesterday and I got the results today and it came back as DCIS...has this happened to anyone?  Will this effect my treatment..the DR. said that they don't test for stage or grade when a second lump is found as im already om the road for treatment it just may change the way they want to treat me...I feel like everytime I get touched they find something new going on.....I know I have a long road ahead of me im just so tired already and I haven't even gotten my surgery date yet.....guess its better theu find everything now then later...

I had two in the same breast, diagnosed about 6 months ago -- DCIS and intracystic papillary carcinoma. It was my understanding that the DCIS is really not something to worry about -- cut it out and forget about it. I know how you feel; it's exhausting and confusing. This has been quite an education, that I certainly never wanted. Keep asking questions of the doctors and nurses, even if you feel like you've already asked the same thing a million times, and write down the answers. And whenever possible have someone else with you to hear the answers as well. It takes a while to come out of shock enough to really understand what's going on.

IDC (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma) and DCIS (Invasive Carcinoma In Situ) are the same type of cancer. The DCIS is great (if cancer can be great) because it hasn't broken out of the cell walls and has not invaded outside into the tissue etc. Some doctors refer to this stage as Pre-cancer or Stage 0.

IDC is the next stage of DCIS, this time the cancer has spread to the surronding normal tissue inside the breast, this is the most common form of BC.  So you don't have two different kinds of breast cancer, you have two different progressions if that makes sense?

So it sounds like you have a plan, regarding the IDC, surgery of some type right? They will simply take the DCIS they found on the  MRI with it.

    Be well!

Lynnette, IDC is invasive, which means it has broken beyond the duct and can invade the breast tissue. It also has the ability to spread beyond the breast (i.e., to the body), but with small IDC tumors, the chance of spread is less than with larger tumors.

Since your IDC was diagnosed first, I imagine your doctors told you your treatment plan? That is based in part on stage and receptor status (ER, PR, Her2). I take it you know that info already for your IDC?

As noted by others, DCIS is non-invasive, which means at this point the tumor is not capable of invading breast tissue outside the duct, nor is it able to spread beyond the breast. DCIS sometimes becomes invasive later, which is why surgery can be recommended.

It is fairly common for IDC and DCIS to be found in the same breast.
