Fibroadenoma getting bigger
Hi there,
I was diagnosed in June with a fibroadenoma that was just under 3 cm. My follow up ultrasound isn't scheduled until December 1st, however, I know by touch that is has increased in size. I am wondering if I should request to have it removed. Does anyone have anything to offer on this subject in terms of advice?
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi GG31- I dealt with a few fibroadenomas before I was diagnosed...I was 26 with my first one which was close to the skin so they left it alone and it disappeared on it's own. Over the years though I found that most of the time they want to remove them but I did have one that was still in my right breast when I was diagnosed that no one cared about and in a completely different area than the cancer. Very inconsistent.Depends on your surgeons opinion about it. If they know for sure it's a fibroadenoma they may just watch it but if it's growing and not shrinking they may take it. I know this is no help sorry! But they are benign. I didn't care either way so I just left the last one. If it bothers you or worries you ask them about removing it. For the most part I find that they don't really like to leave them in.

Hi GG31,
I also was diagnosed with a fibroadenoma in may or june, like you I had a follow up ultrasound in december. When I had mine I experienced quite a lot of pain so one week after my first ultrasound I scheduled an appointment with a breast surgeon. After spending some time with my surgeon we decided to remove it not only for the pain but also for my sake so I would not have to worry about it any longer. The surgery was super easy, a lot easier than I expected and recovery was very quick. I was able to go back to doing my normal routine 2 days after the surgery. If it is getting bigger I would request to have it taken out and if your anything like me you probably think about having it multiple times a day.
Wish you the best,

I found one..felt like the size of an M & M.. doc said more like an almond M & M... thats what started all of this.. after squishings and scannings.. I actually have 6. The one was removed.. the others they said they will leave in there unless they get bigger or hurt. My doc explained like this.." Its like a zit.. I can just pop it right out. Since its additional tissue it wont cause any cosmetic issues" Im not scheduled to go back til March. I feel like a bag of marbles

Please read our technical article on www.breastcancer.org titled What Mammograms Show: Calcifications, Cysts, Fibroadenomas that may explain Fibroadenomas are normal breast tissue that may need closer monitoring in the future.
We hope this info helps settle some fears.

Thank you so much for all the messages. I go back in a couple weeks for another ultrasound and am going to request removal as it is now becoming painful. I have also noticed another small lump closer to under arm area.
Best wishes all
