This is my first post here.   My mother and I recently had our genetic testing completed.  My mom had stage iv invasive breast cancer at age 39. I have lived my loved always wondering and was happy to get tested.  The geneticist was stunned to find that my mom did not have BRAC 1 as her cancer was so aggressive.  Needless to say Brip1 I comes with its own risks as it affects the protein that interacts with BRAC 1. I am 36 and is he is recommending that I remove my ovaries in the next few years.  Has anyone removed their ovaries or considered it?

Hi Ltwig, and welcome to Breastcancer.org.

You'll soon get responses from other members here but, in the meantime, you can learn more about why women have their ovaries removed, what the surgery involves, etc. in the article Prophylactic Ovary Removal from the main Breastcancer.org site.

    We hope this helps!

    Hi  Ltwig

I was diagnosed with IDC 20 months ago and underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction due to family history of bc (gmom, mom & myself). I went through all the genetic testing (found negative for the BRCA gene), but had additional genetic testing and both Mom and myself tested positive for the BARD1 gene. This gene is linked to both breast and ovarian cancer (which runs in my family too). It was my oncologists recommendation to have my ovaries removed. I just underwent a total laproscopic hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy this past Monday. I'm home recovering and so far, my recovery has gone better than expected. My pathology report just came back Wednesday and showed NO cancer cells present! I was able to have everything removed in time before another diagnosis. While not guaranteed I was at very high risk and I have peace of mind now knowing that I've done everything in my power to avoid a second cancer diagnosis.

    Hugs,

    Jen
