Newly Diagnosed - Not sure what to expect
I was diagnosed on 8/19/14 with IDC Stage 1 Grade 2. I am 39 with no real family history. I have a lumpectomy scheduled for 9/2/14. I just went in for genetic testing a few days ago. I have A LOT of calcification and they are removing a good bit of it do do testing when they do my surgery.
About how long after surgery do you usually get results back on what they find.
When did you have this Onco (spelling?) score test done?
How soon after surgery does one usually start radiation?
Thanks

Dear kerensa75, welcome to BCO forums, but sorry for the reason you're here.
It may
just be a calcification, not DCIS, but only the biopsy results will tell. We
hope that is all it is. Time for results is usually within about 5 days but longer if over a weekend. Also varies with locations and labs.Waiting
for results is a very stressful time and you'll get sympathy from others on
this forum as they've been through the waiting too. It is not an easy time at
all.If it is DCIS, it is not invasive and should be able to be
removed without problems. Read about people's experiences with DCIS here DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ). We're hoping it is a benign result. What comes after that, and timing depends upon results and Doctor's protocol, which varies. Some don't do Oncotype Dx test (is often dependant upon location) but that can help in assessing DCIS risk.

I was the same. I was diagnosed in March, IDC grade 1 stage 2, 2 cm, ER/PR+, HER2 -.
Will you also be having a sentinel node biopsy at the time of surgery?
When I had my surgery on April 2nd preliminary pathology was done while I was on the table so they knew when they got clear margins and lymph nodes. Full pathology results came on day 3.
My Oncotype wasn't done until the end of April. Unfortunately for me I did end up doing chemo. I've also made the choice to have a mastectomy on Sept 12th, but will not be doing radiation.

thanks noonrider
I actually am not sure about the biopsy you mentioned. I do know they are removing a few lymph nodes.
My surgeon already mentioned I would need 6 weeks of radiation. He said also that depending on the test results of they take out, either hormone therapy or chemo. Just trying to take it one day at a time right now
Good luck with your surgery!

Yes, it sounds like they will be doing a sentinel node biopsy. A lot will be riding in the information gathered from your nodes. Once the cancer gets to your nodes it changes the course of treatment. Please do keep us posted, and continue to ask questions as you think of them!

Karensa
Welcome, but sorry you have to be here.
The waiting is so very hard & scary. September 2nd is almost here, so I wish you peace in these last few days before surgery. I think you will find that they can give you some information right away...and you will have to wait a few days for the full pathology. While you are waiting for pathology, just try to rest & heal your body.
Once they get the info on pathology, things seem to slam into high gear. Radiation &/or chemo if recommended will be explained when you know what you are dealing with.
Good luck. I will be thinking of you.

Karensa,
I was diagnosed with a 2 cm IDC on July 21, 2014. My surgery is Sept 5 with sentinel lymph node biopsy.
They've told me I won't know the results until 10 days after my surgery but right now they are saying just radiation therapy. We don't know what stage or grade until then.

Hi Karensa,
I was diagnosed with IDC on 8/8/14. I agree with with SmartassSmurf that the waiting is the hardest part. I will get my genetic test results next week and those results will have a big impact on which way I go with treatment. I will meet again with the surgical oncologist on 9/16 and my surgery will be scheduled then. I have been writing questions down for every scenario that the doctors have mentioned when I met with them. Am hoping the tests are negative, that there is no lymph node involvement and that my oncoDX score is low. I know this is hard but just keep in mind that our treatment options are so much more and so much better than they were even 5 years ago. Good luck with your surgery and keep in touch.

Leihla,
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you have your surgery on Friday. You will have answers soon so you can make the decisions that you are comfortable with. Keep in touch

Newly diagnosed by biopsy with IDC, had Screening mammo in April 2014 which was read as Birads 2 benign, never any mention in report about calcifications, I found this by doing monthly SBE, mass and lymph node found on US, biopsy shortly after confirmed mass and lymph node positive, anyone else have benign mammo 4-5 months prior to diagnosis?
