fluid retention due to taxol

I having issues of weight gain due to taxol,I have even stopped steroids and and I  am having  more issues with weight gain. Doctor feels it is due to fluid retention. Need help with this.

I wish I had answers!   I am struggling with taxol weight gain also.   My MO checked my heart even bc of the fluid retention and that wasn't the issue.   I am hoping to hear from people once they are done taxol.  Did the weight/fluid come off? How long?

my infusion nurse told me that Taxol has contributed to my water retention/weight gain.....here's hoping!

Thanks everyone for joining my topic,I also have been told taxol is making me gain weight due to water retention. I'm looking for anyone that has suggestions to help minimize the gain and other suggestions to help with weekly taxol.

I had about 9 lbs. of water retention from Taxotere.  My MO prescribed Lasix and within a few days the problem was solved.  I was told this is a common SE.

I had about 8-10 pounds of water weight gain on Taxotere. It was still there about 8 weeks after my final chemo, so my PCP prescribed hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic, and it came off easily with that. My fingers and hands were noticeably swollen with the fluid retention. I've also heard it's a common side effect with the taxanes.

I already take a diuretic with my high blood pressure and still have fluid retention.

I start my first chemo session with taxol tomorrow morning. I have finished four cycles with cyclo and doxorubicin. I am scared to death. Can anyone give me some idea what to expect. I know that we are all unique but how was the nausea and the bone pain?  Was there anything else that you noticed to be a handicap. All comments are welcome. Thanks.

Taxol is usually better tolerated than AC, especially at the beginning of the 12 week course. The infusions don't take as long as AC, the blood counts are less impacted, you feel fine right after the infusions. I didn't have any nausea or pain and my hair started growing while I was still on taxol. 

The side effects from taxol are cumulative and usually more pronounced by the end of the course. Watch for neuropathy and tell your nurse or MO if/when you notice the first signs. They can reduce the dose or even stop it if neuropathy gets worse. 

In my case, the dosage was reduced after the third infusion because my liver enzymes were five times normal range. I got some neuropathy but it resolved itself within a month or two. I am still struggling with a swollen foot from taxol, was told it is a typical side effect and may or may not go away.

Speaking of weight gain I gained about four pounds by the end of chemo but I am not sure whether it's from the chemo or the steroids or both. I lost this weight without any effort once the chemo ended.

I had no weigth gain on Taxol (fluid or orther).  My thought is that if you are retaining fluid you might want to ask for more heart or kidney tests.  Any chemo can effect other parts of body.  Just reread and see you are on diuretic already for high BP - your GP or heart Dr would be the one to check with.  How is your BP doing?

Chrissy - I had no nausea at all on Taxol even though I quit taking any of the anti-nausea meds 1/2 way through the 12 weekly.  I had no bone pain. either.  A/C had been really easy and did not slow me down at all but Taxol was not as nice.  I was completely and utterly EXHAUSTED the entire time.  I existed either in bed or on couch in front of TV but then I didn't have to anything unless I wanted to - Hubby took over all house and dog chores and Son took over all barn/horse chores.

There is no way to know ahead how you will react.  For some one is 'easier' and another isn't - we are each unique.

muska - I was 'in and out' quicker on A/C than on Taxol.  I did loose my 'head hair' and about 1/2 of lashes/brows on A/C.  On Taxol, ALL hair on body 'left'.  I finished Taxol in late JAn. and it was early May before hair started growing back.

As long as I have been around here, it seems that it's about 50/50 as to how we each react to A/C and Taxol.  There is no 'One Size Fits All'.
