Found help to cope with mouth pain!!

Options

I started chemo on 6/16.  My mouth has been raw.  No sores yet but my throat and mouth feel like they are burnt.  I've been sucking on ice chips to numb it which helps but isn't my favorite.  Today I made watermelon balls for my kids.  I froze some for myself just because.  It is Awesome.  Keeps my mouth cold and isn't like ice.  Just a suggestion to help cope!  Freeze some melon!  Good luck to everyone!  :-)

you might want to try magic mouthwash

    One part children's Advil

    One part liquid benydryl

    One part Maalox

Swish for a couple minutes and spit.  It was a miracle wash for me.

My onc even wrote me a script for lidocaine drops and I added a drop to the solution to help numb the inner mouth area.

I will!  Thank you!  I've done all the usuals.  Salt, baking soda, Biotene etc.  I'm trying to control it before the sores develop. :-)

I just read about taking L-Glutamine....it supposedly helps with preventing mouth sores. I start Chemo on July 16th....and am doing research into reducing all the side effects.

Karc80, if you can find it, I recommend trying a mouth rinse that has witch hazel in it.  Tom's used to make one that also had baking soda in the mix but have since discontinued (I think).  The only time during chemo that I developed mouth sores was when I had ran out of it.  I then helped along the healing by dipping a q-tip in witch hazel and dabbing it on the sores I got.  The magic mouthwash I was prescribed didn't do much of anything for me besides numb my mouth slightly (which did make it a little easier to eat, but I too was looking for a preventative.)  Found out about the Tom's on a food-related website of all places, within a thread containing chemo-friendly recipes.  I really wish Tom's still made it, it was the best thing ever for me at the time.
