Iodine - test and dosage
does anybody know an easy way to test iodine levels? I live in Denmark and can't find ANY Places that do the tests or sell them. I read somewhere that you could use the skin as a test - if the iodine was absorbed after some time it would indicate low levels. However I don't know if this is sufficient.
Also, how much if insufficiency has been determined, should you take? I read somewhere that about 12 mg a day was an appropriate amount but maybe that was just for "healthy" people without a prior cancer diagn?
thanks for any advice

New, do a search for iodine here on BCO. There were several lengthy threads about it. Also check on recommended daily allowances for iodine and overdoses of iodine. Some of the amounts recommended on the internet are HUGE.
I think this was the thread where it was discussed at length: Iodine Thread

INFO ONLY
Iodine and how it is used in this education process.
The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, CA, dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy, an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.
http://gerson.org/gerpress/video-the-4-components-of-the-gerson-therapy/#4: Supplementation
The Gerson Therapy also includes a number of supplements, such as niacin, vitamin B-12, digestive enzymes, pancreatic enzymes, potassium compound salts, Lugol’s solution and more. Dr. Max Gerson experimented for years to determine which supplements worked best to enhance the therapy. Some supplements, like the B-12 and niacin, provide additional nutrients otherwise lacking from the diet. Others, like the Lugol’s solution and thyroid medication, boost the thyroid gland to enhance the body’s metabolic processes.

Good articles yogagirl. My holistic doc has me on iodine--25 mg/day. He sells it from his office though I usually get mine from amazon. The other day a lady needed to buy some and he said that it's not available from the manufacturer. We asked why and he said the FDA is causing a lot of problems--apparently iodine supplementation has gotten popular enough to make the FDA nervous. We checked amazon and they do still have it but I wonder if that's b/c they have a lot of stock and maybe anyone who's going to get iodine needs to make sure that they order ahead.

I recently tested my iodine by doing a 24 hour iodine urine test where urine is collected for 24 hours and then tested for iodine. To my surprise, my iodine level was over the normal range so I started using salt without iodine. I had a hard time finding doctors to order it but my doctor said that the skin test for iodine is also another way to test it.

It's been a while since I've looked. I was surprised to see all the posts and helpful links. Thank you everyone.
It's a little overwhelming all the things you CAN do. It feels like you can always do something more. But the past months Ive just focused on trying to relax without doing all the "bad stuff".
take care everyone
