I just had a lumpectomy and SNB for a 4.5 cm IDC. Now that I am over surgery I have to wait on the pathology. I see lots of ladies with small tumours of IDC that have chemo and rads.

I am starting to really get myself worked up because my tumour was so large. My surgeon did tell me initially that I would likely need rads.

My surgeon said that he did a large excision. And he thought that it may have been a bit larger than the ultrasound :(

I am just worried about my prognosis.

Did anyone our there also have a large tumour and do ok? I don't know my grade or stage. I'm still in the waiting game.

Lumpectomy usually needs radiation no matter what size the tumor is. With the mastectomy the cut off for radiation is 4cm. I know it's not easy not to worry but try to look at it this way- you can't change the size of your tumor but there are some things you could do to better your odds. Reduce your stress, eat healthy and exercise. I am sure things will get a lot less stressful for you once you get your pathology back and have a treatment plan in place. And remember that prognosis is just a number and we are all different.

Islandmama-I think you just gotta wait for the Path report. There's no way to know until you get the results. I had micromet in my SN which was discovered after my lumpectomy. My BS was surprised, I was devastated. It turned out k because I had the Oncotype test and got a lie score so no chemo. Once you get the stage and grade things will become a lot clearer. Try not to worry and keep us posted. Diane

I think the lumpectomy was the best choice as my breasts are really large. I'm a 34L! I am still considering mastectomy but will wait for the pathology report. I am really hoping it comes back next week. I am prepared to do the radiation but hoping I don't need to do chemo.

This roller coaster is not fun at all and I want off!

I know I have to wait for the path and nobody can tell me otherwise I was just looking for something I guess.

    well my surgeon called tonight.

Tumour was 4.7cm, clear margins. Small amount of cancer cells in 1/6 nodes. Triple negative. Stage 2B.

Now I have to go to cancer clinic to get set up with chemo followed by rads
