Bariatric Surgery AFTER Breast Cancer Treatment

Options

Hi everyone!  I have gained a horrid 120 pounds since going through treatment 3 1/2 years ago.  After the first chemo, I became instantly menopausal.  I have been on Tamoxifen for 3 years.  I am considering bariatric surgery but my only concern is the affects of losing the weight so fast and introducing estrogen (stored in fat) into my system.  I am going to talk to my oncologist but I feel that the risks of being morbidly obese far outweigh the risks of getting breast cancer again due to losing weight so quickly.  Anyone have any experience with this topic?  Thanks!  Emily

I'll be curious to see replies as well. I was in the process of being approved for bariatric surgery when I was diagnosed recently.  I feel my fat is feeding my cancers since I'm 100% ER positive.  So I think it's more important than ever to get to a normal weight!!

Shadylady, I don't think the estrogen is created by burning or losing fat. It is made from the fat stores. I don't think losing weight unleashes a flood of estroge. Quite the contrast, when I lose about 30 pounds I start having hot flashes again.
