Question about axillary biopsy

Hi

I've been reading and educating myself as my partner was recently diagnosed with IDC.  She's in the process of have the screens...PET was today and Brain MRI and bone scan tomorrow.  While we stress and wait for answers, I have a question.

During her breast MRI last week, it was noted that the lymph nodes lit up and her surgeon wanted to do a biopsy of them.  He performed the u/s biopsy of the axillary lymph nodes last Friday.  His office called today.  The nodes were negative and he is planning to proceed with surgery on May 13th.  She will meet with the oncologist on May 5th to receive results of her scans.

While we have no reason to believe it has spread anywhere else, these scans are of course nerve wrecking!!!  How much faith can I put in the negative axillary biopsy?  Does this mean it's less likely to have spread elsewhere??

I appreciate any responses/stories/reassurances.

    MiaKate,

Unfortunately with BC, even low grade and stage one can spread without it being in the lymph nodes.  It is MUCH more unlikely though.  Until the pathology is back from surgery, it will be difficult to know exactly what your partner is facing.  Waiting on BC results is nerve wracking for everyone.

Thank-you for the responses and info on the other forum.

Thankfully her PET and brain MRI showed no spread.  Surgery is scheduled for next week and we'll get a full path report after that.
