Am waiting to get in w/ a new Oncologist who practices w/a more natural therapy. I am Stage IV  ER pos since 2006 returned 2013.  I am done with Hormone blocking drugs that I react too so badly.  I am not sure what to expect w/ this new Onc but figure its worth another opinion. I  am trying to keep hormones out of my diet but its tough.  I  would like to hear from others who have gone this route.

I guess this is rare Grammy.  I will be going to an onc who works with my holistic doc though I haven't been in to see him yet and not sure what to expect.  I know these guys have to be way more careful than the average MO b/c of the risk getting in trouble with the med board, but I'm guessing that your MO will be most well versed in complementary therapies that will ease the SE of conventional therapies such as chemo.  That's just a wild guess though so I'm asking--are you going to do any conventional therapy besides surgery?  Or are you done with all of that?  Please let us know how it goes.

Hi Grammy. I've been seeing a naturopathic oncologist since 2011. You are lucky to have access to one. In Canada, where I am, they're very difficult to find. I have to leave my province for the consultations, but in a nutshell, he has given me years of life that my regular oncologist thought would not be possible. In addition to providing a whole body approach to care, they are also qualified to prescribe legend drugs, which makes their treatment unique. Because they already have the oncology knowledge to "know how cancer works" and the additional knowledge of lesser known legend drugs that may be effective, you're really getting the best of both worlds. That becomes infinately more important with a stage IV patient, IMO.  Good luck to you and I hope your experience is as good as the one I've had.

ETA: just to make sure you aren't wasting your time and money, and are getting the best care, make sure that your naturopathic onc has years of oncology residency and clinical experience. Not all have both, I found.
