Hi, had bone scan there is increased uptake in cervical, thorasic  spine, knee and ankle. My dr is freaking me out b/c my primary read the report and said it was all good. She gets it now we are in a frenzy wanting me to have MRI's which i will do. I told her i have a cervical fusion, acl repair scolosis in thorasic spine and my injured my ankle 25 years ago. I go to pain management and they tell me im full or arthritis. Should i be worried or do you think it could be from my spine surgeries and such?

Patty…I just had a bone scan today and the tech commented that I had "a lot" of arthritis from old ankle fractures and knee surgery, and…I'm a nurse so I have back problems. She said she could "see" the uptake in my ankles, knees and back due to arthritis and the old fractures but I have to wait for the radiologist to read the images to be sure it is not bone mets. So, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping she's right while I wait for the report. I hope that is the case for you too…take care, (((Hugs))) Maureen

From my first bone scan (5 years ago) and the one and only other one I had 2 years ago, both knees and my right ankle come up black on the film!  I was diagnosed with arthritis in each of those places.  Have since torn the miniscus in each knee, requiring surgery on each knee, and both times the orthopedic surgeon said - you REALLY have some bad arthritis in those knees, and I have sprained my ankle and torn tendons several times in my younger days, so that accounts for the arthritis in the ankle as well (as quoted by the ortho doc).  I betting that's what's showing up on your scans as well as old injuries do turn into arthritis as we age.  Wishing you all the best.

Don't panic. I had increased uptake in arthritic areas. The bone scan report did say something like most likely arthritic changes.

When I had my diagnostic bone scan, there was a lot of uptake, that was attributed to arthritis: hips, knees, ankle, and thoracic spine.  My mother was the same.  Breathe.  Uptake isn't always due to malignancy, but it can be nerve-wracking.
