I am needing to have breast reconstruction 20 years after radiation therapy.  I never had any plastic surgery after my lumpectomy/radiation but now I have one over-radiated perky breast, and one extreme grandma breast.  I can no longer wear a bra because of the extreme size differences.

I am wanting to have a breast reduction/reconstruction on my "good, non-radiated" breast at this time.  After this surgery, in the future I will be looking into possible reconstruction on my breast with severe radiation side affects. But at this time I need to be able to live my life with somewhat equal sized breasts.

Because of this, I have no clue as to finding a good plastic surgeon who is knowledgeable in radiation therapy side affects, breast reconstruction and reduction.  There are just too many horror stories, thus the need to be very careful in selecting the right plastic surgeon to see me through this.

Is there anyone from this area who can give assistance or suggestions on where to start in finding a knowledgeable plastic surgeon in this area.

Thank you,  Barbarella60

Dr. Michel Saint-Cyr at Mayo in Rochester, MN, has been doing my reconstruction. He is wonderful and has a great team. He does all types of reconstruction.

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

Thank you Hopeful24.  I was on pins & needles waiting for a response to my inquiry and there was your Easter present.  I googled Dr. Michel Saint-Cyr and I ran into this discussion boards topic: Rochester Mayo Clinic Doc's., so I had a fair amount of information on Dr. SC.  He sounds wonderful and after a long week of going through twin city PS this was very welcome.  I only hope it's insurance compatible. My girl friend, a R.N. also sum what familiar with Mayo (not Breast related), felt much better about going to see a Dr. there.  I am in the process of gathering a few questions for you and thank you for the invite to PM.  I will also try to get the ball rolling as far as an appointment. Have a wonderful Monday and will talk soon.  Thank you again.  Barb

I also had a great experience at the Mayo Clinic. I had a great deal of radiation back in 1988 to treat Hodgkin disease. I was 20 years old at the time. Since then I have had a double mastectomy, cancer side in 2004 and prophylactic on the other side last August. My first mastectomy was a latissimus dorsi flap. My surgeon the second time around was Dr. Jacobsen. The result has far exceeded my expectations! Along with a nipple sparing mastectomy on non cancer side he revised cancer side and made me smaller. He seemed to be very comfortable working on my radiated skin and was willing to push the envelope to give me the best results. I would highly recommend him and know that he does work closely with the surgeon listed above. Good luck.
