Going nuts waiting for onc. appt.

Hi!  I was diagnosed Jan. 31st of this year with IDC. Stage 1, ER/PR+, HER2-, O/2 sentinel nodes.  It was thought my tumor was originally 7mm, but after lumpectomy, found out it was 1.5cm and grade 3.  I'm 40 years old and premenopausal.  We know radiation would be in my future, but I was thinking I'd get away without chemo.  Now maybe not.

I have met with the rad dr. the other day and he brought up chemo because it was angry cancer.   I will meet with onc on the 14th of this month and thankfully the rad dr. told him to order the oncotype dx test so it will get the ball rolling and won't have to wait until the onc. appt. for it be ordered.

Anyone with same or similar dx that can give me an idea as to what my oncotype dx number may be?  I know there is no way to know for sure, just trying to get a ballpark figure.

I don't think there's any way to know at all what range your tumor would be in.  I've seen cases where the tumor was small and a low grade but Oncotype came back really high.....and then some girls have large tumors, high grade and Oncotype came back low.  The waiting for all the results to come in and a plan to be in place is the hardest part.  We've all been there and feel your anxiety.  Hang in there........

    Hi

the waiting is really the hardest part.... there is no predicting oncotype scores... but it is good that you are getting it--you will need it to make this decision. If the anxiety is too much, maybe your pcp could give you something for anxiety... it really can help....

once you know, you will feel much better about making your plan......

    good luck

shanitis- the waiting is so hard because it gives your imagination time to work overtime. Thing is there is nothing any of us can really say to alleviate your fears because we don't know either and we would be just guessing. Even if we have/had similar symptoms the end result might not be the same. I know because I did the same thing before I got my Oncotype test results. My BS said I had a wimpy cancer but I think that was his buzz word except that it did turn out to be non-aggressive and I got a low score of 11 as a result. I hope you do too. Try and stay busy; it helps and keep the faith. Diane

In that grade 3, what was the mitotic score? That is the proliferation score. If it is 3, likely your Onco score will reflect this and chemo will be a great help. One of mine started out 5mm and grade 2, but ended up after two more readings as being 7-8 mm and grade 3. Oncologist said no chemo because it would be too much for such a small tumor.....your tumor is still small but most would recommend chemo at that size, with a grade 3 (which almost always is more aggressive) More important than this, are your nodes, hormone receptors...so much comes into it...but oncotype trumps everything.

    Hi shanitis,

I'm really sorry about your diagnosis - it sounds like you're right in the thick of things. Unfortunately if the oncotype score were predictable from the path results the oncotype score would be unnecessary. What is very good about your results is that you had no nodes involved, the tumor is still relatively small, and it's er/pr+ Her2- .  The er/pr + is 'good' because you will receive a systemic treatment (tamoxifen) regardless of whether you have the chemo or not.

Hard to wait - we all know how that goes, will keep my fingers crossed for you that your score comes back super low.
