To be diagnosed with another cancer, 6 years later, same breast, different area...
dcis stage 0 in 2009 est+, no chemo or rads just tamoxifen... fast forward 6 years, just diagnosed with IDC stage 1, her2+ estr- pro-
my dr is a bit shocked... im getting genetic testing this coming Monday, no real history in my family other than my mom's sister who died in her early 60's back in 1980 something from BC she never had a mammo by the time the found it, it was too late, in her bones, everywhere...

Pattij -the same thing happened to me. I was dxd with DCIS (er/pr + Her2 -) in 07; I had a lumpectomy, followed by rads then five years on Femara. Fast forward six years I was dxd with IDC stage I grade II (triple neg) in the same breast. That dx got me a mastectomy and some chemo which I just finished in Jan.

Well, I think that my doctors are a bit shocked as well. I had Stage III TNBC in 06. Lumpectomy, chemo and rads.
1 year ago, I had a biopsy and had fat necrosis. 6 month diagnostic was clear, this last one was not. It is 2 cm from the last one and is DCIS - no hormonal markers yet, but probably not TNBC.
While we were waiting for the results, my Uncle talked to a well known surgeon - who told him not too worry about it, that it was scar tissue from radiation (wrong!)

Getting a lumpectomy and node biopsy 3/11, def doing rad this time and maybe chemo with herceptin, surgeon did not recommend mastectomy unless genetic testing for brca comes back positive...also some kind of medication for few years not Tamoxin not sure what at this point... Im OK with no mastectomy since tumour is so small and having it won't increase survival by much..

Hi Patti!
So sorry you have a recurrence. I know how frightening that can be, especially after so long. However, I don't think it is so unusual, at least that is not what my doctor here in Switzerland says. I recently had a new tumor in the same breast, different location. The first tumor was at 12 o'clock position above the nipple. Had lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and a year of Herceptin in 2006. Seven years later, just last Sept, a new tumor was discovered at the 4:00 position. Another lumpectomy, but this time it is followed by tamoxifen because it has a completely different pathology! Nobody seems shocked here. Apparently the same tumor can "change it's spots", and give a completely different status, or, you can grow a completely new tumor, or the same tumor can come back. Nobody knows for sure; I have checked with everyone.
I wish you all the best in your next treatment.

I forgot to add....Herceptin is a great new drug, and it doesn't cause hair loss. I had IV infusions for a year. No side effects, at least I didn't experience any.
Things I would do differently: Get a wig - I wore scarves and since then I have seen beautiful wigs. Don't worry, your hair will grow back in six months after you finish the chemo!
Good luck!

Breast cancer is just pretty unpredictable i guess..thanks for all the support guys this place is great I feel much more in control with knowledge about my disease and treatment... I used to post on hep c boards years ago I was DX with that in 2004 followed trials and treatments and got tons of support i was one of the first to get treated with triple therapy when fda approved and have been undetectable for 3 years with minimal liver damage... community forum saved my life once already lol.
The hepc treatment was a form of chemo and I tolerated it well ... not sure if they are going to recommend it here since tumor is so small I don't want it but I do ya know??

Patti, I have had 2 occurances since my original dx in 2009. With the first cancer, i went through a year of being told it was a cyst which i did not believe. Then a year later the "cyst" was so painful i went to have it drained. Had a 2nd biopsy at that time and was told it was muscinous carcinoma. I had a right partial mastectomy and a year of herceptin therapy. Declined radiation at that time. Four years later, 2013, I found a lump in my left breast. Had a bx that showed IDC. Had a double mastectomy with reconstrution. No further treatment. Then in Feb, 2014, I found another lump in my left breast. Turned out to be IDC. I was shocked because i thought having a mastectomy would prevent that from happening. Obviously, I was wrong. I will begin chemo next week and radiation tx after that. My sister had breast cancer in the mid 1980's and had a radical right mastectomy with no further treatment. She has never had a reoccurrence. So each person is different in their cancer experience. I just think of it as another pothole in the road of life.

1 in 6 women with breast cancer will get it again either as a recurrence or new primary. I had it twice. I also read somewhere that tamoxifen can make the second breast cancer hormone negative. But not always.

Six years ago I had a lumpectomy, chem and rads. I have been on furmara. Up until know no problems, today I had a biosopy for breast calisifactions . Has any one else had this happen ?
