Size of DCIS & totally down

Biopsy reports 3.5 cm of high grade DCIS.  MD yesterday said that within that area there are foci of DCIS to a maximum of 5 mm.  Is that normally what DCIS does?  I kind of envisioned an area of solid DCIS of 3.5 cm but apparently that is not exactly the case.  I had a vacuum assisted biopsy on a prone table, guided by mammography (I think).

On another matter, I am horribly depressed.  I had a very tiny low-grade Stage 1 tumor in the other breast 3 years ago.  I am on Arimidex and still this new beast is highly estrogen receptive!  What gives?  I am having a BMX, can't cope with the idea of radiation.  No confidence in my body.  I actually was more optimistic last time.  Now I feel like I'm doomed.  I look at the statistics about upstaging and just feel horrible, like it is bound to happen to me.  Have to wait until 3/24 for surgery.

Would appreciate info about the size issue.  Any and all comforting comments are welcomed!

njmae, so sorry you are going though this. My DCIS was quite large and found in several areas, I was devastated to say the least. It does feel like our bodies have let us down and how can we trust our bodies after all of this? It's okay to feel like a bomb is about to go off, this is a scary time, you still don't have all the answers. Just know this too will pass and just take it one day at a time, be kind to yourself, and remember to breath. ((Hugs))

I also have a large area of DCIS.  My surgeon estimated 20-25% chance of invasive.  I just try to remember that lots of DCIS never becomes invasive.  Looking forward to getting it out next week and knowing for sure.  Hang in there!
