postmenopausal and radiation

Is there increased skin sensitivity to radiation and radiation treatment of women between 60 - 65years old? Is radiation especially painful and burning to older women? Will I be able to got  back to teaching school?

    mmeyrs,

I was 64 when I had rads last year and I found it just the opposite.  My 'elderly' skin held up wonderfully well to the 28/5 rads.  Some itching and burning and swelling (does get worse the further you go on with the treatment) was taken care of with aspirin.  No broken skin.  Pain was gone by a week or so after the last rad.  Never dealt with any exhaustion.  If I had been working, I would have been able to do so through the rads.

    Good luck with your treatment.

Radiation TXs was not painful at all!  I was 63.  I did burn bad after.  Was no skin issues til the day after last rad when I woke up with entire irradiated area blistered.  Nothing was ever said about age, just that they expected me to burn early being a 'ghost' (very 'white').  Took a while but it healed.

Why couldn't you teach (or do anything you want to) after rads IF you want to?

I had 10 treatments of radiation at age 66...The radiation was delivered by the VERO machine at Shands Hospital in Florida.   It is a miracle machine delivering more radiation with less "wash" i.e. the spread out from the center....I did well and have had no issues whatsoever.  I am grateful to the wonderful people at Shands. I had 6 weeks  Rads last year. I am 66 . You cannot even see any shading where it was. No skin problems until the last week after and for another week then it cleared up. I could not stand a bra or tight clothing but otherwise did pretty good. Chemo was far worse.
