5 years (with lots of nodes too)!!!
Hi ladies,
It is with much happiness that I write this post, having dreamed about it ever since being diagnosed 5 years ago! I found an armpit lump while still breastfeeding my son in July 2008. I was diagnosed only in February 2009 and by then the cancer had grown to almost my whole breast. Doctors had dismissed me with the classic "you're too young, you have no risk factors, blah blah blah". The MRI I had in Feb showed a 10x12 cm area of enhancement with DCIS/IDC. I had neo-adjuvant chemo (clinical trial, dose-dense AC/Taxotere & Tykerb) for a ER+ (30%)/PR-/HER-2+ tumor, a double mastectomy (by choice), radiation with Xeloda, a year of Herceptin, an experimental vaccine trial, and continue with Tamoxifen.
I'm doing great and living life to the max. I've gained weight but exercise as much as I can and even completed a century bike ride around Lake Tahoe. I'm thinking of doing another one this summer to celebrate getting here. I started a new job in 2010 and I've already been promoted twice. Those of you just starting out, there's a lot of hope. I want to thank all of you who supported me in this wonderful community. You are all dear to my heart and I pray that one day breast cancer will be a thing of the past.
Love,
Marcia

As a newbie to the dreaded BC diagnosis, thank you so much for your post, Marcia. It really lifts me up to read all the people beating this! Congrats to you and I pray for many, many, many more cancer free years for you and everyone else here beating it!
-
Marcia ! Excellent !! Keep on going and we know you can ! Wondering if you are on any AH's, including tamoxifen for another 5 or 10 years? I'm probably going to be on tamox at least until November.
-
Me too, 5 years! Woo hoo! Here's to 50 more!

-
Yes, I've been on Tamoxifen since Oct 09 and will likely continue for 5 more years. Thanks for all your support! If you're a newbie, please know that you can make it too!!

Awesome, Laurie!

Not 5 yrs just yet - DXd Aug '09 - so getting close and as far as I know today still NED. Had 19 nodes removed and all 19 were positive. I've been on Femara/letrozole since Feb '10 and will be on it 'forever' unless something changes.
To me, I never worried about being Stage IIIc but was glad that I came out of surgery only Stage IIIc. My DXd type (IBC) is what matters/ed most to me. It's 5 year survival stats are between 25% and 45% depending on the study where the overall stats for all type/stages of BC lumped together is 87%.

That is so encouraging! It is just what I needed to read tonight!
