Lumpectomy, biopsy on my lump

I'm back even though the mammogram and ultra sound left me thinking all was cool.  My doctor called and said they did find one of the three lumps that he wanted biospied.  Basically what the doctor planned to do when he did the physical exam before the mammogram.  The report he got may have been different from the cursory paper they sent me off with.

I thought he was doing a needle biopsy he did a removal of the lump and took a chunk of tissue.  He gave me 8 shots of numbing medication which felt like bee stings.  There was a lot of suctioning and movement and squeezing of breast.  It seemed to take a very long time.  Then he cauterized with some tool which was real gross because the smell is bad. He stitched the wound with regular surgical thread so I have to back have the stitches removed next Friday.

He said take Advil or Alieve for pain which I was annoyed latter because it was painful once the numbing faded.  A few stronger pain meds would have been better.  It seems docs are reluctant to write a script for pain meds theses days!

Does the pathologist contact the patient with the results of the biopsy or will I get them through the doctor's office? Thank you

Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

I'm sorry to hear your doctor did not give you some decent pain medication.  It is so over-regulated now, it's a pain in the ass to get a pain Rx filled.

I would imagine that your pathologist will send the results to the doctor who ordered the biopsy.  At least that was the case for me.  My doctor had the results the next day ... I'm lucky in that respect.  I was treated at a smaller local hospital.

I know those injections they give you can really hurt.  I had to have them for my biopsy and then my lumpectomy. I actually screamed out in pain over the injections prior to the lumpectomy.

I sure hope you don't have to wait for the results until next Friday when the sutures are removed.  That would suck.  I would call the doctor on Monday, and every day after that to see if he has the results.  Again, I was lucky with my lumpectomy in that when I woke up my surgeon was able to tell me that my nodes were clear.

I wish you well .. please keep us in the loop as to what is happening with you.  Write often, we'll help you get through this.

    hugs,

    Bren
