Traveling Weather

Options

Hello to all of my sisters down under,

As many of you know I will be on a cruise from Auckland to Sydney, Dec. 23- Jan. 4. I've been checking various sources for weather but keep finding mixed info with respect to temperatures. I know there are no guarantees, but if you could tell, being residents of these places, what I might expect, it will really help my packing. I always aim to pack light (ex-flight attendant) and a ship's cabin doesn't offer much storage room. Here's where I'll be:

Auckland , Tauranga, Akaroa, Dunedin, Fjordland National Park, Hobart, Melbourne , Sydney

I know it will be summer, but will it be very hot? I've cruised before so know how to dress for the ship, but I am wondering how summery my clothing should be otherwise. I have certain travel staples already such as a packable rain jacket, zip front fleece and sun hat but I'm unsure of the rest. I can't tell you how excited I am about this trip as it's one of the few places in the world I've yet to see and EVERYONE tells me how gorgeous it is. Also, any advice on sheepskin slippers for older dd and wee granddaughter would be great since they have requested that I bring these back for them (younger dd, SIL and his family will be on the trip). Many, many thanks in advance.

Caryn

    Hi Caryn.

How exciting to be going on a cruise!

I'm just north of Auckland. We mainly get weather in the mid 20's (celsius, 70's F) up our way in summer, and it can be humid. (dropping to mid teens C overnight)

Also we tend to get changeable weather from time to time, ie 4 season's in one day, being an island climate. So long as you have a shower proof jacket with you most times you should be fine. Having said that we do get periods of settled weather too- I hope its nice & sunny mostly for you :)

This time of year should be nice. We've started getting hot summery weather already.

Down in Fjordland may be a bit wetter. The west coast of the south island is known for its rain :)

I hope you have a blast!

    kt,

Thank you so much. I really love to travel as light as possible but always worry about being unprepared. Regardless, I know I will have a great time.

Caryn for where you will be in Aus it can be very hot at that time of year with some humidity in Sydney. Hobart can be coolish. As for clothing, if you wear jeans then a pair of jeans for cooler days and light weight trousers, shorts or skirt for hotter days. This teamed with light weight tops and a light waterproof jacket that can double to keep cold wind out if there is a cool change while you are here should get you through no probs. Oh, and don't forget your bathers (swimmers, swimming costume) as I'm sure you would like to have a dip at one of the beaches or on board the ship.

    Hope you enjoy your trip!

    Love n hugs. Chrissy

Hi Caryn, for Melbourne/ Victoria, it can be a mixed bag! Today it reached 38.9c (102F), a cool change has rolled in and it is now 20c (68F) and falling. As kt says, 4 seasons in one day! It happens here too!

Don't forget your sunscreen, the sun can be brutal, and personal insect repellant is always a good idea because the flies and the mosquitoes can be bad too.

As Chrissy suggested, anything in lightweight fabrics is good, it will be warm, but a jacket or sweater is a good idea because it can change quickly and be fresh. The packable rain jacket rolled up in your purse is good for keeping the wind, and rain off you, if you're caught out.

I always lean toward the Genuine Ugg brand for sheepskin products, but there are many stores that have good quality sheepskin, and the slippers for tiny tots are just the cutest thing!

I know you'll have a fabulous time! The Aussies and the Kiwis are the friendliest people, they will make you very welcome in both countries. The landscapes are sensational, and seeing a lot of it from the sea will be extra special. I think you'll be surprised by the sheer size of the place as you travel around. I think that is the most common thing I would hear from visitors when I was Airline Staff too.

I love cruising too! It's definitely my favorite kind of travel these days. I love to just unpack once!

I wish you all the very best for a sensational holiday with your Family!

If you think of anything else, just ask!

    Hi Caryn

Everyone has given you good advice. It can be very hot in Sydney, I don't know what sort of humidity you are used to, Sydney can be brutal when it's hot and the humidity is high.

Hobart can be very hot too, but I've been there in January and it has snowed on Mt Wellington (that's just a 10 or 15 minute drive from Hobart) so you can see it's a country of extremes lol.

Here in Canberra it's been over 100f for the past 2 days and the day after tomorrow we are expecting snow to 1200 metres!!

If you are going to be in Hobart on a Saturday they have the Salamanca Markets (I think they are the best markets in Australia), they have a stall that sells Uggh Boots that are genuine sheepskins, very good, whenever we are in Hobart we get a pair.

You will love Australia, I wish I was going to be in Sydney when you will be there, I'd catch up you :-)

Enjoy your holiday, and have fun on the Bridge climb!

Any other questions, feel free to ask

    Trish

exbrnxgrl, the other ANZ ladies have given good advice. For Sydney, you may need a cardigan or shawl in case of a cool night but, in general, lighter clothes will be appropriate (no winter woolens). Have a fantastic time!

    I love cruising too!

I would love to go on a cruise, but hubby don't like Boats, maybe we should all plan one together ROUND THE ISLANDS,  LOL, (just a thought).  his idea of a holiday is doing the theme parks at the gold coast.  which i would do with him,  but i would really love to do the cruise thing, like 5 nights.  and chrissy they  have yummy food, lol.  like in a couple of years time, give  people time to save up.( just a suggestion anyway).
