collections
i was on one of my other favorite threads this morning, and realized that lots of us have collections of things, whether accidentally or on purpose, and i thought that it might be fun to see what we all have, with or without an explanation! i will start, with pictures i already have, n i hope that others will come and we can have fun! so, obviously, christmas ornaments is what i will post first, but as i wander around the house i will take new pics of other random collections. hope you will join me, & have fun!

My daughter helps me post photos.
I'll be back next week! -
if I can figure out how to post photos I will. I collect vintage mesh purses, mostly Whiting & Davis and Mandalian. They are like small works of art on an unexpected canvas. -
hi teka! hope you come back! exbrnxgrl, those sound beautiful. -
OO - I just found this thread. I collect Raggedy Ann/Andy though most out of my affordable range now. Also cookbooks esp. old children's CBs.
Exbrnxgrl - I love old mesh purses. I have one that belonged to my GM. I think it might be Whiting and Davis. My mother was an antique dealer so I know just a little about a lot of things.
Lynn - love your plates.
I have a friend who collects old small ivory colored mirrors - I think they might be celluloid. Never asked. Makes a very pretty wall display. -
luvmygoats,
I have never been a collector but after I acquired my first one, a brand new one made by Whiting&Davis Intl., I became fascinated by how they were made and did lots of research, so I know a lot about what I buy. I then began buying examples of different styles, different time periods and just things I fell in love with. I'm on a buying hiatus right now as I'm taking a trip to New Zealand and Australia and putting my extra money towards that. But I still browse etsy and ebay and hope to buy a few more after my trip

oooh, New Zealand & Australia!! can i come with? -
Please, make room for me! -
Oooooo!!!!! Fun thread!!
I'll try to take some pics this week, but I collect anything related to Victorian Era cycling. Books, stereoview and cabinet cards, bells, lamps, bicycles.... I got interested about 3 years ago. Not much extra cash, but I enjoy looking and dreaming and occasionally finding a great catch.
My daughter and I ride with an antique cycling club on two bikes I found and restored. Mine was built in 1899 and the one she rides was built in 1896. I have another bike waiting to be fixed. I don't do museum type restoration. Just clean them up and make them safe to ride while keeping them as original as possible.
I have one mesh purse that I use as part of one of my cycling costumes.

Dulcigirl, love your quote! And the picture. is that you modeling it? i do have a big bunch of old stereoscopic pictures i found in an old house me and my boyfriend restored 15 years ago. mostly architecture, but traveling ones too, let me know if theres anything in particular you would be looking for. i am sure i could part with a couple! are those button up boots? show pics of bikes? Of course you come too,Teka, i insist! -
Thanks! Yes, that's me about a month before my diagnosis. I love the stereo cards....but am limiting myself to collecting any with bicycles in them. Or "the new woman" themed ones. My favorite card is a woman in bloomers with a bike. She is facing her husband who looks kind of frazzled. The caption is "Sew on your own buttons. I'm going for a ride!" Cracks me up! My son says I like bratty songs and things like this because it's the stuff I think but never say. Ha!!! My boots just lace. And I will try to get some bike pics soon. They are tucked away for the winter. They aren't super fancy/highly valuable, but I love, love, love them! The history of cycling in America is very fascinating. It impacted so many things that most people don't realize. I like the "shiny stuff" as much as the next gal....but it's the history that really gets me. -
You have given me a very good reason to sit down and look at all the stereoscopes. will let you know. that subject sounds fascinating. -
that's so nice of you. Have fun looking! -
dulcigirl,
Great picture and outfit. I see you're wearing the purse like a chatelaine purse. Is it a chatelaine purse? Looks like a very well preserved armor mesh. Is it hallmarked on the inside of the frame or have a little metal tag with the manufacturers name? Sorry for all the questions, but I just love mesh purses!
As for New Zealand and Australia, I'd take you all if I could! I'm quite well traveled but have never been down under. I can't wait and even the idea of a horrendously long flight isn't dampening my enthusiasm.
Caryn -
I chose to wear it as a chatelaine because I need hands free for cycling. I bent an antique silver spoon to make a hook (works great!) to hang either the purse or a skirt lifter from. No metal tag and the inside is just marked "german silver" if I remember correctly. I will try to remember to check tomorrow. I'd love to know more about it! I estimated it to be after our cycling club's time period. (Pre-1918.) But I love it and it was the first ebay purse that went low enough for my bid to win. ("Cheep, cheep, cheep!") -
Well, I can tell, you a few things based on your post. German silver is not silver at all but rather a nickel based alloy. Whiting and Davis find not use German silver in their frames or mesh, but their were smaller companies in the US and Europe that made these. Since it appears to be armor mesh, you're probably right about the time period. Whiting & Davis patented a mesh making machine in 1912 which allowed for mass production of these purses. By the end of the 1920's these enameled mesh purses began to go out of style. If you're interested in better prices, I find good deals on etsy and even get the sellers to lower their price sometime. Great piece!

thanks!! I love to learn about everything I use so I can answer correctly when asked! I knew that it was not silver, though a silver polishing cloth helps with the tarnish. Nickel makes perfect sense as the bikes we ride were nickel plated. (Chrome came later.) -
If anyone is interested in seeing most of my collection, pm me and I'll direct you to my Pinterest page. -
