I am currently on Taxol, Herceptin and Zometa for bone mets. We recently got a kitten, 3 months. She is so sweet. She has peed on me three times in the two weeks we have had her. Could it be something that she smells in the chemicals? She doesn't do this to anyone else, only me. Help!!

Hi - I've never had a cat or kitten pee on me in the 45 years I've had them. My guess is she's smelling a chemical, or even cancer. when a cat pees on something deliberately it is a signal - an indication, asking for help, for something to be noticed, that all is not quite as it should be - not to be in any way alarmed about yourself - I think it's just a natural animal reaction - in these boards there have been posts about animals who smell cancer. someone will soon come along with just such a story........:-)

Is it possible you hold her a lot more than anyone else? When we got my daughter a kitten I held it every second I could when my daughter was out.

Does she squat and pee deliberately or does she have a little accident?

It could be either a medical issue or a behavioural issue.  She may have a bladder infection, which needs to be treated.  Otherwise, she could be picking up on feelings of stress or anxiety and is demonstrating her own anxiety.  She could, also, be going into heat; she's young, but it's not unheard of.  Lastly, she may need some retraining and positive reinforcement to go back to using the litter box.

Maybe, maybe not, related. Years ago, when my neighbor was getting chemo for lung cancer, her 6-year-old cat suddenly started to have behavior problems -- I remember one was that he would 'playfully' attack her and leave her scratched and bitten (she was in her 70s). Her doctor did mention it may have something to do with her cancer and/or chemo. The cat was sent to another family member.

Thank you everyone. Our Cleo was just spayed a week ago and only five days after we got her. Maybe all the stress of new home, surgery, feeling my stress is effecting her. She has had a slow recovery also. I am going to try to use wipes after I use the bathroom and see if that will help maybe some scent she is picking up on from chemicals. Otherwise I will just have to stay away from her for now which is hard because she is really very sweet. She has not scratched or bitten once even while playing. Any more ideas are welcome. Hope that works - I know you understand she is not a "bad" cat she is doing it for her own good reason in the only way she can communicate - as i say I've had cats for nearly all my life and peeing on a particular person is very, very unusual. if a bladder problem it would likely be on an object. Since she's been spayed it's not that. She doesn't scratch you or bite. Did you by any chance have her declawed? just occurred to me........

No she has not been declawed. She has two scratching posts and is such a good kitty that I don't think that would be necessary and I really don't want to do that. We have an 18 year old adopted daughter whose mom left her with us when she was 13 and said she would send for her. Well, that was that. She always wanted a cat so we told her when we moved to a place where we could have pets she could have one. This turned out to be such a blessing for all of us. I will let you know how it goes.

yes, totally agree, no declawing - ever - I'd just wondered if that had happened besides all the rest, in which case she'd have had her fill of anxiety-producing situations.

I'd consider taking her to the vet. That is not normal behavior. My cat's behavior did not change when I was going through chemo... of course every animal is different, and my cat was an older cat and yours is a kitten.

Check with the vet just to rule out a physical problem. If it isn't ask your vet if he/she has any ideas and/or suggestions. Maybe she is sensing your high stress level, or it really could be some weird chemical smell, cats are much more sensitive than people (I wouldn't stay away from her though, that would be impossible!).

thank you ladies for your response. Today was the first time I could think about Cleo without crying. Our precious Cleo passed away last Saturday. We took her to an emergency vet and he said that the doctor who did the spaying had made serious mistakes in the surgery. I was so angry and upset for my daughter and Cleo. We had taken her back to the vet twice during the week and called daily. The vet told us we were being dramatic and over reacting, that the cat was fine and all was normal. I just pray that the vet who did the surgery learned a lesson and will take seriously concerns voiced. Our adopted daughter had wanted a cat all of her life and then for this to happen is just too sad. Even though we only had Cleo for two weeks, we all miss her very much. She was a delight in our home. Again, thank you and God Bless

Neither of my 2 cats did anything differently during my chemo. And even I could smell the chemo pee. Perhaps go to jackson Galaxy website and ask him? He's a cat behaviorist. Hes' the one on My Cat from H*LL. Then tell us what he suggested.

I'm sorry she passed away. I woud report the vet. He did not do his job. I hope you find a cat when you are farther along in your mourning for poor Cleo.. and now that you know there was a problem with her, you know she felt safe enough to pee with you right there.....so it was a way to show how much she trusted you.

I am so sorry about your dear sweet Cleo - indeed all was not well in her world and she tried to tell you, but we are not cat mind readers and your vet sounds horrid. You were her mom, she chose you. You did everything you could. You even tried here on BCO! Rest in peace, little Cleo. Voodoo stick pins for the vet.

I have to say you ladies are amazing! Your caring and concern for all aspects of each other lives is wonderful. Thank you so very much for all the love and support. Ali has starting mentioning getting another kitty but is not there yet. I told her that Cleo would want her to share her big heart with another little kitty. She is afraid Cleo would think she did not love her if she got another kitty. I assured her that was not the case. Again thank you so very much. Blessings, Kathy
