3D mammogram vs. MRI for ALH/LCIS

Hello to everyone...

I haven't been on the boards in a while. I was diagnosed with ALH at the age of 30 (three years ago) and also have some fibroadenomas. Since then I have had alternating diagnostic mammograms +ultrasounds and physical exams every 6 months. Last spring my surgeon suggested an MRI with contrast. It was my first MRI and I was very nervous but felt much better when it came back clear. I should mention that I have dense breast tissue. Now, my surgeon wants to do 3D mammogram. I have my appt. in the morning. What I want to know is has anyone been upgraded from ALH to LCIS after receiving clear MRI results 6 months earlier? For those who have had the 3D, what is your impression of its benefits?

I'm not sure exactly what your question is. Are you concerned that something will show up on the 3D mammo that didn't show up on the MRI 6 months ago? Possible, but not likely. ALH is often found bilaterally (as is LCIS), but often is not seen on any imaging (mammo, US or MRI). What imaging studies are really looking for is invasive bc, and your MRI was just clear so it's likely this will be as well.

Best of luck to you. I know how stressful it can be, but try not to worry ahead of time, it doesn't change anything and the unecessary stress is not good for you.

My MRI and BSGI were both normal without findings. A regular mammogram the previous day found microcalcifications. The biopsy showed LCIS and ALH. The radiologist said calcifications rarely reveal LCIS. Not sure any of this was helpful to you but I always try to find scientific studies on diagnosis. Hope you get normal results!
