chocolate cake, coconut cream pie, cobbler, chocolate chip cookies
-
Dutch Baby
-
Eclairs
-
flapjacks
-
I don't know that I would eat flapjacks for dessert; but I'd eat fudge, fried ice cream, or Banana Foster
-
gingersnap pie crust for gelato icecream pie
-
hagen daz (says it all for me),
-
ice milk (Anyone remember that? Less sweet and I think less fat than ice cream in the 50's).
Edit: Just looked it up. Apparently it was less fat but could have same sugar.
-
Jello
-
Kings cake (to celebrate three kings day)
-
lemon meringue pie, Linzer torte, ladyfingers
Sara, I remember ice milk! It was born in 1959 so it must have been around in the 60's too.
I also remember when yogurt was a little-known health food and TCBY was "this can't be yogurt." Now it's "the country's best yogurt." 'Course, I also remember when McDonald's was new and actually kept track of the number of burgers it sold. Now their signs say billions and billions served.
-
marshmallows, milk shake
Badger, I just looked it up - less fat but same sugar. Apparenly now sold as low-fat ice cream. But now I don't like so much sugar. Sice you're in WI, do you remember when the dairy industry insisted that margarin could not be sold with color added to imitate real butter? It came in a plastic pouch with a food color pellet to mix in. Kids loved squishing it around.
-
Nestles chocolate bar, and, according to Wikipedia nun's puffs aka num's farts" very light puffy cookies) Ha!
-
oatmeal cookies, Oreos
-
peanut butter cookies, pecan pie, pralines
Sara, I'm not a WI native but have heard about contraband oleo.
https://www.wisconsinlife.org/story/state-ban-oleo-margarine-led-smuggling
My mom remembers getting white oleo with the color dot during WWII and said she hated squishing it.
-
Quince and Apple Pudding
Badger, maybe she associated it with wartime deprivations and rationing. I think It was a defensive measure by the dairy industry to stifle competition. Yellow margarin was always available to us just over the border in Illinois (much later than wartime of course).
-
red velvet cake, rhubarb bars, raspberry pie
Sara, we can get margarine here now, but you may have heard about the controversy over Kerrygold Irish butter.
-
Whoopie pies
Badger, this cracks me up. I think I'll run out and find some Irish butter. Margarine was always allowed as long as it was white, which is pretty disgustinging. I haven't been back in years except for a highscool reunion and to show my kids. The countryside was soooo beautiful and lush and green!
-
strawberry shortcake, sundaes,
-
Oops! I followed red velvet cake wit a w dessert. I just love that word "velvet". so here's a t word:
tiramisu
-
upside-down cake
-
Sara, let me know how you like it. I haven't had Irish butter but can get delicious local product so why buy something imported from afar. 'Twould be like bringing coals to Newcastle.
It's funny how this game sticks in your mind. I was cooking supper and thought ooh for R-Rice Krispies treat!
OK we're on V - vanilla ice cream, vanilla ice milk ;-), vanilla cream pie
