Has anyone had rads to breast lying on their stomach?

Options

I went to see the radiation oncologist today.  I had my lumpectomy a week ago but went for my initial appointment.

I am large breasted so he said I will get my radiation by lying on a table with my breast hanging through a hole.

If you have done this, can you share your experience ?

Thank you.

Yes, I remember the humiliating core biopsies.  it is always something here in Cancer Land.

I did my rads that way (prone).    28 regular treatments and 5 boosts.    It was a bit awkward getting into the position at first, but after a few days I got pretty good at it.   It is nothing like the core biopsy table, or at least it wasn't for me.  For one thing, there is nothing compressing your breast while you are on the table - it just kind of dangles there.  They make a foam mold that is customized for you to lay in with the arm on that side up over your head and your face turned to the side. Getting into the correct position takes much longer than the actual treatment does, but once I had the hang of it (so to speak!) it wasn't uncomfortable.

I was lucky enough to have no skin trouble and while I did have fatigue, it wasn't debilitating at all.   Being prone also reduces the potential exposure to the heart and lungs, so while not comfortable, is definitely preferable.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions and I'll try to answer if I can.

Yes, I had prone position rads 3.5 years ago, and I am gladl I was able to have my left bc rads this way (consider safer and I enjoyed being less exposed/more private)! If you haven't already, you should read the  prone rads thread on this forum, it's probably on page 2 or 3. Good luck!
