What about men?

My dad was recently diagnosed with stage 1 Breast cancer. Luckily he is doing great after his mastectomy and doctors don't believe he will have to go through any other heavy treatments.

My dad was lucky indeed to have found it in stage 1 and no spreading to the lymph nodes near the arm pit. Less than 3% of breast cancer victims are male and even less are diagnosed in stage one. Most men are found in stage 4 and usually do not have success in recovering.

No one ever really thinks or takes seriously "men get breast cancer" and neither did I until it happened to a man I love. After much talking about it and my own reflections I believe more men, dads, uncles, brothers, husbands, sons should be made aware that this is a serious situation for their sex and not just for the women they love.

If more men knew that the odd lump is not just deformed muscle but cancer and didn't procrastinate in seeing a doctor, how many more dads could be saved from stage 1 and not be lost to stage 4?

Hello SavetheDad, and welcome to Breastcancer.org.

We hope that you and your father will find support here in the discussion boards, in the Male Breast Cancer forum, as well as from the information on the main Breastcancer.org site at the Male Breast Cancer section.

As well as the information specifically directed to men with BC, the site and these forums are filled with info about treatments, tests, medications and other subjects that can apply to anyone, female or male, dealing with breast cancer.
