Rads with History of Skin Cancer?

I was just diagnosed with DCIS and will be going to to see a BS this week. The area of DCIS is 1.5 cm, grade 2, so I'm expecting that the surgeon will recommend a lumpectomy with rads, that is if nothing further shows up on my MRI.

I'm curious whether anyone with a history of skin cancer has had rads or if it wouldn't be indicated for me because of the radiation exposure? I've had basal cell skin cancers removed for the last 20 years (too much time in the sun with very fair skin) and I don't want to speed up the process of getting more, or even getting melanoma in the future. I've had skin cancer removed from my chest as well.  Any info is appreciated.

    Hi Kee,

I too have had basal cell skin cancer and lots and lots of "pre-cancer" things removed (I'm a ginger who grew up in the sun). I asked my rad-onc about this and he said it was a good question but that there was no science to support any concern or any increased incidence of melanoma for those of us who get radiation and have previously been treated for basal cell cancer.

My radiation hasn't started because the mastectomy wound hasn't healed - but should start by August 15. I expect to use a good lotion (recommended by my dermatologist) called "Cereve" - it has stuff in it that is more than just moisturizer but I don't recall exactly what it is, but it's a healing ingredient. This derm said he even used that product himself. It's available over the counter at drug stores for about $14. Not bad. And in a pinch I use it on my face, even though I'm still prone to acne at 49.

I hope you'll talk with your rad-onc about your concerns to be sure, but this is what mine said.

    All the best,

    Mum

I have had both basal & squamous cell skin cancers, as well as many precancerous skin things. My RO cautioned me about further sun exposure to radiated areas. Protect those areas forever! My RAD fields might be larger than some. In addition to both chest, armpits & part of back. My skin remains slight discolored fromRADs. Makes it easier for me to protect it. Best of luck with your treatments.

    Thank you, Mum and Coraleliz.

I don't think I will be having radiation after all because I was just diagnosed with IDC in the other breast by MRI, so now I'm having a BMX, not a lumpectomy.  Do they still do radiation after a BMX?

I stay out of the sun which isn't easy living where I do, but I plan outdoor activities for late afternoon so I don't get burned.  That Cereve lotion sounds good for lots of skin things, I'm going to check it out.

I had a BMX for bilateral IDC. I ended up also having RADs. On one side it was so I could avoid an ALND & the other side due to lymphatic vascular invasion. I f you find yourself in RADs(& I hope you don't!), it's the areas that weren't covered up by our bikini tops that will cause the most problems. Hoping your up coming surgery is as unevevtful as possible. Take care
