Mastitis? Picture included
Good evening,
I want to start by saying that everyone on this forum is truly amazing! Your stories are so inspirational.
I am 34 years old, no children. I am currently being treated for mastitis with my OBGYN. Obviously I am not breast feeding, nor have I ever. The symptoms started out in mid May when I noticed a slight swelling above my areola. It was followed by discharge that went from a thick, yellow, pus to bloody and watery. The area around the areola started to redden and thicken (see picture). The pain was very intense, ranging from a constant ache to sharp shooting pain. I never had any fevers or felt especially tired. just the pain, the discharge and the area that swells up and looks angry. the breast is also hot to the touch. When I went to the dr she prescribed Cephalexin for ten days. It took several days, but the redness diminished some. It took on a bruised appearance instead. Still had bloody discharge. She did take a sample of the discharge and send it off for pathology. Results showed Staph. In addition, the cells came back atypical. When I returned for my check-up, she said it was better but still looked bad. So she prescribed another round of antibiotics (Clindamycin 10 days). She also took another sample of the discharge and ordered a mammogram and ultrasound (done 23 July). The radiologist on staff says there is not abscess. The second course of antibiotics haven't done diddly. There is certainly less discharge, but the redness and tenderness are just as bad as when this all started.
I am now waiting on the results of mammo and ultrasound to be evaluated by Dr. Also waiting on the second cytology results of discharge. My appointment for follow up is next week. After talking with a dr friend, he informed me that some cases of mastitis can be particularly hard to clear up.
My concern is that it is something more. I don't not generally play on Dr Google, but after two months of this I'm concerned. Should I push for a biopsy? I have to go through the VA as I am a veteran and do not have private insurance yet. It can take weeks or months for an appointment. I feel like my dr is doing everything that is required, but would like to know if anyone has ever been treated for mastitis before ultimately getting a diagnosis of IBC?
I appreciated anyone who reads this and takes a look at the picture I included (taken this evening).
