Stage 1b BCS - Need to choose betw. BSO and total Hysterectomy
Hi there, I'm a Stage 1 IDC survivor diagnosed in 2009. I'm currently 51 years old. I had what I thought was my last period in April of 2010. Was on Tamox from 5/2010 to 11/2011 and then I was switched to Arimidex because my bloodwork showed i was menopausal. I stopped taking the Arimidex in January 2013 because I felt like I was ovulating. I had some spotting. They sent me for bloodwork and it showed that i was no longer menopausal so I was sent for a Uterine biopsy, came back that i had Hyperplasia without atypia and glandular crowding. My gyn suggested a D&C. About two weeks before my D&C was scheduled, I had a full period, lasted 5 days. The D&C pathology also came back clear. My GYN and Onocologist both agree I need to have a bilateral saplingo oophorectomy, but my Oncologist also thinks I should have my uterus out. Has anyone else experienced this?

I finished 4 years Tamoxifen and noticed spoting after some investigation hyperplasia and i did total hysterectomy and oophorectomy just because my Onc told me Hyperplasia can turned to cancer and i did it and feel great

I don't understand why you need to have anything removed if the D&C pathology came back clear. Sounds like your uterine lining was building up, and then you bled like a period, so probably shed it all off. I'd be asking lots of questions about why this is necessary, and would want a 2nd opinion as well.
I also went 2 years without a period, during the 3 years that I was on tamoxifen, then about a month or so after stopping it, had a period that lasted 5 days. GYN considered it postmenopausal bleeding and suggested D&C, but also said that I might want to think about hysterectomy, mainly to avoid having to repeat these procedures repeatedly. I said absolutely not, waited for the D&C results, which showed nothing wrong, and that was the end of that. That was over a year ago, and I was also 51 at the time. I have not had any bleeding since.

Thanks for the reply fadheir. I actually have an appointment for a second opinion from a gyn onc tomorrow. I have a feeling they are going to say complete just to be safe. My regular onc wants either a total hysterectomy, she is off the belief, if you don't need it anymore, get rid of it. Not too sure I feel that way. Other option she gave me is the Lupron shot. I'm not too fond of the possible side effects of that. Guess, I'll wait to see what gyn onc says. Are you still taking any HT i.e., Arimidex?

Hi rgiuff,
Thanks for the reply. I am going for a third opinion with a gyn onc tomorrow. My regular gyn also wants to remove everything. I think they are being cautious and figure, if I dont' need it anymore, take it out. I'm not a fan of that idea. I guess their being concern is that my ovaries keep waking up and my breast cancer likes that so they are trying to lessen the opportunity for a recurrence. I think the thickening of the lining is also a concern. My regular onc suggested Lupron shots but not crazy about that idea either, lots of side effects. I guess I'll see what the gyn onc says tomorrow and then make a decision.
