Mets: Hybrid of Cancer Cell and White Blood Cell

Yale Cancer Center scientists, together with colleagues at the Denver Police Crime Lab and the University of Colorado, have found evidence that a human metastatic tumor can arise when a leukocyte (white blood cell) and a cancer cell fuse to form a genetic hybrid.

It's taken more than 100 years to get this evidence for a German pathologist's theory. Hope things move a bit faster from hereon, beginning with evidence in BC.

This is kinda scary. I guess the question of why the body's immune system isn't destroying cancer cells has always vexed us... now to hear that cancer cells could be using white blood cells to their ADVANTAGE is scary.

There have been studies that look into 'alerting' the immune system to the cancer cell's presence (under the premise that all this time the cancer cell has gone unrecognized by the immune system, and thus 'left alone' instead of destroyed) as if the immune system would destroy the cancer cell if only it recognized it... BUT NOW we are supposed to believe that the immune system isn't sneakily circumvented by cancer cells, but rather blatantly USED by cancer cells to proliferate?

    That's frightening. What the hell?

What is the deal? There is a temptation by many to categorize cancer cells as 'smart'... but nothing that kills it's host, thereby killing itself... will ever be called 'SMART' by me.

What the hell. What a stupid disease.
